Convert Revit RVT files to AutoCAD DWG for free, right in your browser, with no Revit licence and no Autodesk software.
This tutorial opens a four-storey apartment building from Revit and walks through everything the free RVT to DWG converter does: orbit and zoom, layers by Revit category, exporting the whole building as a 3D DWG, and making a floor plan DWG with a plane cut at window height, the Top view, and "DWG 2D drawing of this view". The plan is then checked in the free DWG viewer. Revit 2010 and later opens, and so do Revit families (.rfa). The model is read in your browser and the DWG is written there too. It works on phones and tablets, and there are free apps for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android. No software to install and no account needed.

Intro
Here is how to convert a Revit RVT file to an AutoCAD DWG, for free, in your web browser, without Revit.
Open the converter
Go to innerscene.com/tools/rvt-to-dwg. There is no account and no Revit licence needed, and the model is read right here in your browser.
Open a Revit file
Click Open an RVT File, or drop the file on the page. Revit 2010 and later opens, and so do Revit families. This is a four-storey apartment building, a public domain sample from NIST, with walls, floors, windows, doors and stairs.
Look around the model
Drag to orbit, scroll to zoom, and right-drag to pan.
Layers
Tools, then Layers, lists the Revit categories, and each one becomes its own layer in the DWG. Untick the roof and the floors open up.
Convert the model to DWG
To convert the whole building, click Download DWG. The DWG is written right in your browser, with the 3D model on its Revit layers, at real size. It opens in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight and other CAD programs.
A floor plan as a 2D DWG
For a floor plan, slice the building first. Edit, then Plane cut, and move the plane down to window height on the ground floor. Cut, then View, Top, looks straight down into the plan. Now Export, DWG 2D drawing of this view, saves the plan as a flat drawing, with walls, doors and windows as lines.
Check the plan in the DWG viewer
To check it, open the DWG in our free DWG viewer, at innerscene.com/tools/dwg-viewer. There is the ground floor plan, ready for AutoCAD: zoom in and every wall, door swing and window is there.
Other formats
Back on the RVT page, Export also converts the model to IFC, STEP, OBJ, GLB, FBX, USDZ, STL and 3MF, and to DXF, PDF, SVG and PNG.
