Convert RVT to DWG (Free)
Also converts STL, OBJ, GLB, PLY, USDZ, 3MF from the same file.
Runs in your browser. No upload, no signup, nothing to install.
Also from Innerscene: Circadian Lab, a free lighting calculator for room illuminance, melanopic EML, and glare.
How to convert RVT to DWG
- 1
Open your .rvt file
Drag it onto the viewer above, or click "Open an RVT File". Files up to 200 MB open directly; the parse runs in a worker so the page stays responsive.
- 2
Pick AutoCAD Drawing in the Export menu
Click Export in the toolbar, then DWG (.dwg).
- 3
Download
The .dwg is written in the browser and saved straight to your downloads folder. No queue, no email, no watermark.
What survives the conversion
A file conversion is a translation, and formats do not carry the same things. Here is exactly what moves from RVT into DWG, and what does not.
| Geometry | Reduced | RVT stores exact B-rep solids and DWG stores triangles, so the surfaces are tessellated. Curved faces become faceted at the display tolerance, which is fine for visualization, printing and clash checking, but not for further parametric CAD work. |
|---|---|---|
| Colors and materials | Reduced | RVT can hold material colors and DWG holds one color per object, so materials are flattened to that. |
| Layers and structure | Kept | Layers survive as real layers in the DWG file, so you can still isolate and toggle them. |
| Units and scale | Kept | DWG stores an explicit unit, so the model opens at true size without rescaling. |
What the DWG writer emits: The same R12 geometry as the DXF export, converted to binary DWG by a native converter on our server. Layers, colors and units carry across. This one step is the only part of a conversion that leaves your machine, and it sends geometry only.
The source: Autodesk Revit (.rvt)
Revit 2020 and later, rebuilt from the element database: walls with their joins and openings cut, floors, roofs, ceilings, stairs, railings, columns, framing and placed families, in per-category layers.
The target: AutoCAD Drawing (.dwg)
AutoCAD native. Hand it to anyone who asked for "the CAD file".
Opens in: AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, Revit, Civil 3D, ZWCAD.
What happens to your file
Your RVT file is parsed in your own browser tab and never uploaded. Writing a binary DWG is the one step that cannot be done in a browser, so the geometry we generated locally is posted to our own converter as a DXF, turned into a DWG, and sent straight back.
What travels is the exported geometry, not your original file: no source document, no file name, no metadata. Nothing is retained after the response. RVT → DXF
Frequently asked questions
▶Is this RVT to DWG converter free?
Yes. No signup, no watermark, no per-file limit and no paid tier. Innerscene.
▶Is my RVT file uploaded anywhere?
Your RVT file is not. It is read and converted in your own browser tab. Writing a binary DWG is the one step no browser can do, so the geometry produced locally is posted to our converter as a DXF and comes back as a DWG. Your original file, its name and its metadata never leave your machine.
▶Will my colors and materials survive the DWG export?
RVT can hold material colors and DWG holds one color per object, so materials are flattened to that.
▶Do layers and named parts carry into the DWG file?
Layers survive as real layers in the DWG file, so you can still isolate and toggle them.
▶Will the DWG open at the right size?
DWG stores an explicit unit, so the model opens at true size without rescaling.
▶How large an RVT file can I convert?
Up to 200 MB, and the ceiling adapts to how much memory your device reports. The conversion runs on your own hardware, so a desktop with plenty of RAM will handle more than a phone.
▶Can I convert DWG back to RVT?
Not here. We read RVT and write DWG, but not the reverse. the universal 3D viewer
▶Which browsers does it work in?
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. No plugin and no extension.
