Open SolidWorks SLDPRT and SLDASM Files Without SolidWorks (Free, Online)

Open SolidWorks parts (.sldprt), assemblies (.sldasm) and drawings (.slddrw) for free, right in your browser, with no SolidWorks licence and nothing to install.

This tutorial opens a SolidWorks rocket assembly and walks through everything the free SolidWorks viewer does: orbit and zoom, the parts list (hide parts to see inside), the exploded view, converting SolidWorks to STEP, STL, OBJ, GLB and DWG, a part in the colours it was given in SolidWorks, and a drawing with its sheet and title block. The file is read in your browser. It works on phones and tablets, and there are free apps for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android. No account needed.

Intro

Here is how to open SolidWorks parts, assemblies and drawings for free, in your web browser, without SolidWorks.

Open the SolidWorks viewer

Go to innerscene.com/tools/solidworks-viewer. There is no account and no SolidWorks licence needed, and the file is read right here in your browser.

Open a SolidWorks assembly

Click Open a SolidWorks File, or drop the file on the page. Parts, assemblies and drawings all open. This is a competition rocket from the University of North Dakota Advanced Rocketry Club, a SolidWorks assembly of 18 parts.

Rotate the model

A rocket stands tall, so Edit, then Rotate, turns it on its side to fill the screen.

Look around the model

Drag to orbit, scroll to zoom, and right-drag to pan.

Parts

Tools, then Parts, lists the parts of the assembly by name. Untick the body tubes and the nose cone, and the avionics bay, bulkheads and centering rings inside come into view.

Exploded view

Explode parts pulls the rocket apart to show how it goes together, and can play it as an animation.

Convert SolidWorks to STEP, STL, OBJ and more

Export converts the model: STEP and SAT for other CAD programs, S T L and 3MF for 3D printing, O B J, G L B and FBX for Blender and the web, and D W G, D X F and PDF drawings. Here the rocket saves as a STEP file.

Parts in their SolidWorks colours

Parts keep the colours they were given in SolidWorks. This display module opens with its blue board, its screen, and its connector.

SolidWorks drawings

Drawings open too, as the sheet saved in the file: here the rocket's fin set, with its dimensions and title block.

Phones and tablets

The same page works on a phone or tablet, so you can check a SolidWorks file you were sent, anywhere.

Free apps

There are free apps too: for Windows and Mac, for iPhone and iPad on the App Store, and for Android phones and tablets on Google Play.

Summary

That is the free SolidWorks viewer and converter at innerscene.com. Links are in the description.
