Intro

Here is how to open and view a DWG file without AutoCAD, for free, in your web browser, on a computer, a phone or a tablet.

Open the DWG viewer

Go to innerscene.com/tools/dwg-viewer. There is nothing to install and no account to create. It runs in Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox, on Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebooks.

Open a DWG file

Click Open a DWG File, or drop the file on the page. This is a real AutoCAD drawing: the dimensional drawings for our Circadian Sky fixtures. The file is read right here in your browser. Nothing is uploaded unless you choose to share it.

Zoom and pan

Scroll to zoom in toward the cursor, and drag to move around. The drawing is drawn as vectors, so lines and text stay sharp at any zoom. The buttons in the corner zoom in and out, and the bottom one fits the whole drawing again.

Layers

Choose Tools, then Layers, to see every layer in the drawing. Untick a layer to hide it. Here the hidden lines go away. All and None switch every layer at once.

Measure

To measure, open Tools and choose Add measurement, then click two points. Points snap to line ends and corners. This trim measures 3 feet 11.72 inches, the 47.72 inch dimension on the drawing. Units switch between metric and imperial in the same menu.

Share a link

Share uploads the drawing and gives you a link. Anyone who opens it sees the drawing just as you left it, at your zoom. You can let them download the original file, and post the link to LinkedIn, X, WhatsApp, Reddit or email, where it shows a preview image of the drawing. Embed gives you the code to put this viewer, with your drawing, on your own website.

Export to PDF, DXF, SVG and images

Export converts the drawing. D X F and D W G for CAD programs. S V G, or a vector PDF that prints sharp at any size. A self-contained H T M L page that opens offline, with layers. Or a P N G or J P G image. Here is the vector PDF, saved in a moment.

On a phone

On a phone, open the same page in Safari or Chrome, and open the file from your phone, a cloud drive or an email attachment. Pinch to zoom, and drag with one finger to move around.

On a tablet

On a tablet you get the full toolbar, with layers, measuring, sharing and export, all by touch.

Free apps

For everyday use there are free apps too: for Windows and Mac, which open DWG files with a double-click, and for iPhone and iPad on the App Store.

That is the free D W G viewer at innerscene.com. Links to the viewer, the apps and the converters are in the description.
