Free Daylight Calculator: Sun Patch, Daylight Factor and Sun Path for Any Room

Check how much daylight a room gets, for free, right in your browser, with nothing to install.

Set up a room and its windows, pick a city, a date and a time, and the Daylight Calculator draws the daylight on the workplane with the exact sun patch outlined in red. Hover any point for its illuminance, split into light from the sun, the sky and the room surfaces, with melanopic EDI and colour temperature. This tutorial plays a winter day in a Chicago room, counts the hours above 300 lux and the hours that meet WELL L03 tier 1 and tier 2, shows daylight factor under the CIE overcast sky with contour lines, adds buildings opposite and an overhang that blocks the summer sun, moves the window to the east wall, turns the building with the compass, reads the sun path diagram, switches to metric for London, opens the month by hour table for the year, saves the plan as a PNG and the grid as a CSV, copies a share link and opens the room in CircadianLab, where the colour scale opens fitted to the daylight, to add the electric light. Everything runs in your browser: the sun position comes from the NREL solar position algorithm, and the light inside the room from a radiosity solve with six bounces.

Calculate Daylight factor calculator, sun patch on a floor plan, sun path for a room, hours above 300 lux, WELL L03 daylight, melanopic EDI from daylight, overhang shading, buildings opposite (obstruction angle)

Intro

Here is how to check how much daylight a room gets, for free, in your web browser.

Open the Daylight Calculator

Go to innerscene.com/tools/daylight-calculator. There is no account, and every calculation runs in your browser.

The sun patch

It opens on a sample room in Chicago, 14 by 12 feet, with one south window, on December 21 at 2 PM. The plan shows the daylight on the workplane at desk height, in foot-candles. The red outline is the sun patch: the exact area where direct sun lands right now. Hover anywhere for the value at that point, split into light from the sun, the sky, and bounce off the room surfaces, with the melanopic EDI and the colour temperature.

Through the day

Drag the time slider to move the sun through the day. To compare hours, fix the colour scale so every hour uses the same colours, then press Play the day. The day chart below plots the room average for every half hour, against a 300 lux target. It counts the hours above 300 lux and the hours that meet WELL tier 1 and tier 2. Click the chart to jump to a time.

Daylight factor and mel-EDI

Show also offers melanopic EDI, the light that drives the body clock, for circadian design. For daylight factor, pick the overcast sky, the standard sky for this measure, then choose Daylight factor. The contour rings mark equal daylight factor, and the summary card gives the room average: 3.9 percent here, which is well daylit.

Buildings opposite and overhangs

Buildings or trees opposite sets how high the view out is blocked. At 30 degrees, a typical street, the low December sun drops behind them. Now June 21 at noon, with an open view. The high summer sun still lands in a strip by the window. Add a 3 foot overhang above the window, and the summer sun is blocked. Back on December 21, the low winter sun still comes in under it.

Move the window and turn the room

Drag a window along its wall, or onto another wall. Here it goes to the east wall. Drag the compass to turn the building. The wall labels give each wall's true bearing.

Sun path

The Sun path tab draws the sun's track through the year, with the room turned to match. Click an hour mark to jump to that time. At 9 in the morning, the sun shines straight in through the east window.

Any city, in metric

Switch to Metric for metres and lux. Search for any city. Here, London. The table through the year gives the room average for every month and hour, on the 21st of each month. Click a cell to open that moment on the plan.

Save, share and open in CircadianLab

Save plan PNG downloads the plan with its legend, and Save grid CSV gives the values at every grid point. Share link copies a link that opens this exact room, place and time. When the daylight works, Open this room in CircadianLab takes the room, its windows, the place and the time into our free lighting calculator, to add the electric light. Its colour scale opens fitted to the daylight that came in with the room.

Apps for Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android

There are free apps too. On Windows, a small helper opens your 3D models and drawings in the Innerscene viewer with a double-click. There is a Mac version, an app for iPhone and iPad that can also scan a room, and one for Android phones and tablets on Google Play.
