Convert SolidWorks and Inventor Files to STEP Without SolidWorks or Inventor (Free, Online)

Convert SolidWorks (.sldprt, .sldasm) and Autodesk Inventor (.ipt, .iam) files to STEP for free, right in your browser, with no SolidWorks, no Inventor and nothing to install.

A SolidWorks part file keeps its exact solid model (Parasolid) beside the triangles SolidWorks draws, and the STEP is written from that solid model: every body a solid with its true faces, planes as planes, holes as cylinders and curved faces as curved surfaces, in millimetres, each face in its SolidWorks colour. This tutorial converts an OLED display module (114 bodies, 2,512 faces) and checks the file in the free STEP viewer. A SolidWorks assembly holds only the display triangles of its parts, so SLDASM to STEP writes faceted solids: each part a closed solid of flat faces, named as in SolidWorks, at its place. We convert a competition rocket of 18 parts and list its parts in the STEP viewer. Inventor keeps its exact solid model in a form only Inventor reads, so IPT and IAM to STEP write closed faceted solids at true size from the triangles Inventor saved, with each assembly component named as in the Inventor browser (Holder:1, Slider:1), in the axes it was drawn in. The viewer says after every download what the STEP holds. The same files also export to STL, 3MF, OBJ, GLB, FBX, SAT, DWG, DXF, PDF and more. Files are read and converted in your browser and never uploaded.

Intro

Here is how to convert SolidWorks and Inventor files to STEP, for free, in your web browser, without SolidWorks or Inventor.

Open the SLDPRT to STEP converter

Go to innerscene.com/tools/sldprt-to-step. There is no account and no SolidWorks licence needed, and the file is read and converted right here in your browser.

SolidWorks part to STEP

Click Open an SLDPRT File, or drop the file on the page. This is an OLED display module from ARIG Robotique, a SolidWorks part with 114 bodies. Click Download STEP. A SolidWorks part keeps its exact solid model inside the file, and the STEP is written from it: 114 solid bodies and 2,512 faces, with the planes, cylinders and curved faces they were modelled with, each in its SolidWorks colour.

Check the STEP file

Open it in our free STEP viewer, at innerscene.com/tools/step-viewer, and the module is all there, in its colours and at its true size. In SolidWorks, Inventor, Fusion or FreeCAD, these are solids you can measure, mate to and edit.

SolidWorks assembly to STEP

Assemblies convert too. This competition rocket from the University of North Dakota Advanced Rocketry Club is a SolidWorks assembly of 18 parts. An assembly file holds only the display triangles of its parts, so its STEP has faceted solids: every part a closed solid of flat faces, named as in SolidWorks, at its place in the assembly. In the STEP viewer, Tools, then Parts, lists them: the fins, the centering rings, the bulkheads and the rest.

Inventor part to STEP

For Inventor, go to innerscene.com/tools/ipt-to-step. This is a public domain test part from NIST, saved in Inventor. Inventor keeps its exact solid model in a form only Inventor reads, so the STEP is written from the triangles Inventor saved: one closed solid of flat faces, 860 by 680 by 400 millimetres, at true size.

Inventor assembly to STEP

Inventor assemblies open on their own, from the display cache Inventor saves inside them. Each component becomes a STEP part named as in the Inventor browser, here Holder:1 and Slider:1, at its place and in its colour.

STL, OBJ, GLB, DWG and more

Export has the other formats: STL and 3MF for 3D printing, OBJ, GLB and FBX for rendering and the web, SAT for other CAD programs, and DWG, DXF and PDF drawings.

Apps for Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android

There are free apps too. On Windows, a small helper lets you double-click a SolidWorks or Inventor file in File Explorer to open it in this viewer. There is a Mac version, an app for iPhone and iPad on the App Store, and one for Android phones and tablets on Google Play.
