Open E57 Laser Scans Online and Trace a Floor Plan to DWG (Free, No Software)
Open E57 and LAS laser scans for free, right in your browser, and trace a floor plan from the scan to DWG for AutoCAD. No scanner software, no account, nothing to install.
This tutorial opens a terrestrial laser scan of a historic stone smokehouse (14 million points in colour) and walks through the free point cloud viewer: orbit and zoom, View then Floor plans, which finds the floor in the points, slices the scan 1.2 m above it and traces the walls as lines (both faces of the walls and the gap of the doorway), measuring in the plan, and saving DWG or DXF floor plans at true size. Then converting the scan: LAS for Autodesk ReCap and Revit, PLY, XYZ and PCD point lists, and OBJ or GLB. Finally a plane cut lifts the roof off to show the inside of the walls. LAS and LAZ files open the same way. The scan is read in your browser and stays on your device.

Intro
Here is how to open an E57 laser scan for free, in your web browser, and turn it into a floor plan for AutoCAD.
Open the E57 viewer
Go to innerscene.com/tools/e57-viewer. There is no account and no scanner software needed, and the scan is read right here in your browser.
Open a laser scan
Click Open an E57 File, or drop it on the page. LAS and LAZ files open the same way. This is a historic stone smokehouse in Arizona, scanned by the National Park Service: fourteen million points, in colour.
Look around the scan
Drag to orbit, scroll to zoom, and right-drag to pan.
A floor plan from the scan
View, then Floor plans, finds the floor in the points and slices the scan 1.2 m above it. The walls are traced as lines: both faces of the stone walls, and the gap of the doorway. To measure, open Tools, choose Add measurement, and click two points. The inside of this wall reads 3.7 m.
Floor plans as DWG
Export, DWG floor plans, saves the traced plan for AutoCAD, at true size, one drawing per level. DXF works too.
Convert E57 to LAS, PLY and XYZ
The same menu converts the scan: LAS for Autodesk ReCap and Revit, PLY, XYZ and PCD point lists, and OBJ or GLB for rendering.
A section through the building
Edit, then Plane cut, slices through the scan like a section. Keep the bottom, and the roof lifts off to show the inside of the walls.
