Open IFC Files Online for Free: Properties, Schedules and Floor Plans (No Revit)

Open IFC files for free, right in your browser, with no Revit, no Archicad and nothing to install, and get the information out of them.

This tutorial opens a two-storey medical and dental clinic exported from Revit (IFC2x3, 254 doors, 58 windows, 269 rooms) and walks through the free IFC viewer: click any element for its IFC class, type, storey, adjacent rooms, material layers with thicknesses and every property set, and copy them to a spreadsheet. Search by class, name, storey or any property value (for example FireRating = 60) and highlight or isolate the matches. Show one storey at a time. Floor plans cut at the file's own storeys and named from them, saved as DWG floor plans for AutoCAD. Door, window, room and light fixture schedules, downloaded to Excel or CSV. A room from the file taken into CircadianLab, our free lighting calculator, with its outline, area and ceiling height. The viewer also exports IFC with its classes, storeys and property sets kept, opens BCF issues, and reads IFC2x3, IFC4 and IFC4.3. The file is read in your browser and stays on your device unless you share it.

Intro

Here is how to open an IFC file for free, in your web browser, without Revit or Archicad, and get the information out of it.

Open the IFC viewer

Go to innerscene.com/tools/ifc-viewer. There is no account and no Revit licence needed, and the file is read right here in your browser.

Open an IFC file

Click Open an IFC File, or drop the file on the page. IFC 2x3, IFC 4 and 4.3 all open. This is a two-storey medical and dental clinic, exported from Revit, with 254 doors, 58 windows and 269 rooms.

Look around the model

Drag to orbit, scroll to zoom, and right-drag to pan.

Element properties

Click any element to see its IFC data. This wall shows its class, type, storey and the rooms on each side. Below are its material layers with their thicknesses, and every property set from Revit. Copy puts it all in a spreadsheet.

Search and highlight

Search finds elements by class, name, storey or any property value. Type class equals IfcDoor, and Highlight shows all 254 doors.

Storeys

Tools, then Storeys, lists the floors with their elevations. Pick First Floor to see it on its own.

Floor plans

View, then Floor plans, cuts each storey the way a plan view does, named and placed from the file: First Floor at zero. Export saves them as DWG floor plans for AutoCAD, one per storey.

Door, window and room schedules

Tools, then Schedules, lists every door with its mark, type, size, storey and the rooms it connects. There are windows, rooms with their areas, and light fixtures too. Excel downloads them all, one sheet per schedule.

Light a room in CircadianLab

For lighting design, Tools, then Open in CircadianLab, lists the rooms in the file. Find the central waiting room: its outline, area and ceiling height come from the model. Open it, and the room is ready for fixtures in our free lighting calculator.

Summary

That is the free IFC viewer at innerscene.com. It also exports IFC, DWG, PDF and OBJ, and opens BCF issues. Links are in the description.
