Here is how to open a 3ds Max file without 3ds Max, for free in your web browser, with its textures.
Open the 3ds Max viewer
Go to innerscene.com/tools/max-viewer. There is no account and no 3ds Max licence needed, and the scene is read right here in your browser.
Open a .max with its textures
A .max file stores only the paths of its texture images, so zip the .max together with its maps folder. Click Open a 3ds Max File and pick the zip. This Batak style house opens with its materials: the red roof, the painted wood siding, the timber stairs, and a palm tree with cut-out leaves.
Look around the scene
Drag to orbit, scroll to zoom, and right-drag to pan.
3ds Max layers
Tools, then Layers, lists the 14 layers saved in 3ds Max: the roof, the structure on each floor, the lanterns, the terrain and the plants. Switch the roof off to look inside.
Missing texture images
Open the .max on its own, and the surfaces are drawn in plain colours. A card lists each image the scene needs, so you know what to ask for. Drop the images on the card, or zip them with the scene.
A stained glass lamp
Here is a stained glass table lamp, made in 3ds Max by Wayfair, zipped with its colour, normal, roughness, metal and glow maps. The glass shade, the amber beads and the bronze base each keep their own material.
Convert MAX to GLB, OBJ and DWG
The Export menu converts the model to OBJ, FBX and DWG. Choose GLB to get one file with the textures packed inside, ready for Blender or a game engine.
