Free Online 3DS Viewer (No Signup)

3DS is the original binary format from Autodesk 3D Studio (the DOS-era predecessor to 3ds Max). Still common for legacy game and architectural assets. View and convert 3D Studio (.3ds) files in your browser.

Works in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge — no plugin required

Private by default — files are parsed locally in your browser. Uploading is only required if you choose to share a link.

What Is a 3DS File?

The .3ds format was the native file of Autodesk 3D Studio, the DOS-based modeler that became 3ds Max. It uses a chunk-based binary structure and stores meshes, materials, texture references, cameras, lights, and basic keyframe animation.

3DS has hard limits inherited from the DOS days (65 535 vertices per mesh, 8-character material names) but it remains the most widely distributed format for legacy game assets and stock 3D model libraries.

Who Uses 3DS Files?

Anyone working with legacy 3ds Max scenes, classic game-mod communities (Quake, Half-Life, the original Unreal), and the countless stock-model libraries that still distribute in .3ds.

Common Use Cases

  • Preview a 3DS asset from a stock-model library or game mod
  • Verify a hand-off from a 3ds Max user without installing the app
  • Convert .3ds to GLB for web / AR delivery
  • Convert .3ds to OBJ or STL for modern toolchains
  • Generate a PDF snapshot for documentation

Features

Open Instantly

Drag and drop a .3ds file — the chunk-based binary structure is parsed in milliseconds.

Materials + Smoothing

Material colors, smoothing groups, and texture references all load from the 3DS chunks.

3D Navigation

Orbit, pan, and zoom with mouse or touch to explore every angle.

Convert to GLB

Export .3ds as GLB for modern web 3D and AR delivery.

Convert to OBJ

Save as Wavefront OBJ for use in Blender, Maya, MeshLab, and beyond.

Convert to STL

Export as STL for 3D printing a legacy game or stock-model asset.

Export as PDF

Generate a snapshot PDF for documentation or asset reviews.

No Upload Required

Your .3ds is parsed entirely in your browser via three.js TDSLoader.

Modern + Legacy

Handles files exported from 3ds Max, GMax, and the DOS-era 3D Studio Release 4.

Embed on Any Site

Add the 3DS viewer to your website with a single iframe embed code.

Compatibility & Format Notes

Geometry, material colors, smoothing groups, and texture references all load. Texture image files are referenced by name and need to be alongside the .3ds to display. Animation tracks are parsed but playback is not exposed in the toolbar.

Embed on Your Website

Add this viewer to your own site with a single line of HTML. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate an embed code, or use the snippet below with your own file URL.

Your Files Stay on Your Computer

Your 3DS files are parsed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared unless you explicitly click the Share button. Shared files are hosted for 90 days then deleted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between .3ds and .max?

.3ds is the open exchange format from the original 3D Studio (DOS). .max is the proprietary 3ds Max scene file — complex and only readable by 3ds Max itself. If you have a .max file, export it to .3ds, .fbx, or .obj first.

Why are my textures missing?

3DS files reference textures by external filename only. The actual image files (.bmp, .jpg, .png) need to be in the same folder. If you only have the .3ds, the geometry will render with default colors.

Can I convert 3DS to GLB or OBJ?

Yes — click Export in the toolbar and pick GLB (modern web 3D), OBJ (universal mesh), or STL (3D printing).

Is this 3DS viewer really free?

Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 30 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.

Can I convert to another format?

Yes. Click Export in the toolbar to save as STL (3D printing), OBJ (Wavefront), GLB (glTF binary), or PDF (snapshot of the current view).

Can I embed this viewer on my own site?

Yes. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate a one-line <iframe> snippet you can paste into any HTML page. You can choose whether the embed shows the viewer’s toolbar.
