When you swap files with consultants, the file you get is often not the one AutoCAD wants. This tutorial converts four of them to DWG. First a DXF floor plan, like one saved from an older CAD program: the DWG keeps its layers, colours and millimetre units, and it is an AutoCAD 2000 file, so every AutoCAD since then opens it. Then a DWF plot set with four sheets: pick the lighting plan with the sheet arrows and save that sheet as a DWG with its layers. The sheet records its drawing scale, 1:50, so the DWG comes out at true size: in the DWG viewer, grid line A to grid line E measures 24 m. A sheet that records no scale comes out at paper size, in millimetres, and the converter page says so. Then an IFC model from a BIM team, a medical clinic: Download DWG writes a floor plan for each storey, cut 1.2 m above the floor, and we check the plans and their storey layers in our free DWG viewer. Then a STEP model of a chandelier from our free parts library: Download DWG gives the 3D model at real size with each part on its own layer, in its own colour, so in the DWG viewer (Tools, then Layers) you can hide and show parts, and the DWG three-view drawing sheet gives a top, front, side and 3D view at 1:1 in millimetres, ready to copy into plans and elevations.
