SketchUp SKP design review

Explore a SketchUp SKP design in VR

SketchUp models are often the first place a room, shop or building takes shape. Open the saved SKP in your headset browser and use VR to discuss furniture relationships, enclosure and the proportions of the proposal.

Open the file on a compatible WebXR device, then press Enter VR.

Private local review, directly from the file

Open your file directly on the device running the headset browser. The browser parses it locally, so a confidential model stays on that device during local viewing. No conversion, no plugin, no upload, no account.

The optional Send to VR headset workflow on a computer uploads a local file after your confirmation to create a hosted share and pairing code. Choose direct local opening on the headset when your model needs to stay on that device. An already hosted model can also be opened from its URL.

Give an interior concept depth

A furnished SketchUp room invites questions about what someone sees from an entrance or across a counter. The headset adds binocular depth and head movement, so a client can look around a partition and understand how overlapping furniture and joinery divide the space.

For an exterior concept, start with the whole massing model and rotate it to compare the entrance, canopy and neighbouring volumes. Enlarge the entrance area for a closer discussion. Use these changes of viewpoint to identify which parts of the concept need another iteration.

Choose the components that explain the proposal

Inspect the received SKP in the ordinary viewer and use its available layers to simplify the review. Furniture components and detailed landscaping can add substantial geometry. A focused room or shop layout is easier to handle on a headset than an entire furnished site.

Check the surfaces and openings you plan to discuss before entering VR. Saved geometry supplies the scene, so a clear handover includes the relevant walls, joinery and context in the file. Direct SKP reading lets a recipient begin from that saved model without preparing a separate VR package.

How to open SketchUp SKP in VR

  1. 1

Open the SketchUp SKP viewer in your headset browser

Use a browser and device that support immersive WebXR. Make your file available through that device’s file picker, then open the viewer.

  2. 2

Choose your file and inspect the loaded model

Open the local file, check the geometry in the ordinary 3D view and confirm the source units and a familiar dimension. Choose the visible layers that explain your review.

  3. 3

    Press Enter VR

Use the VR control after the model loads and accept the headset session prompt. The model starts at an inspection size, with its largest dimension fitted to 1.5 metres. Use the controllers to position, rotate and scale it.

SketchUp source inches become metre scene coordinates

The SketchUp reader converts the source coordinates into metres. A model authored using an imperial display and one authored using a metric display can therefore be measured in the ordinary viewer using the same unit controls. Check a familiar countertop or room width when receiving a model.

VR fits the model to a 1.5 metre stage and lets you change its visual size. Use that presentation to compare proportions and viewpoints. Record exact furniture gaps with the ordinary measurement tool when preparing a fit or access decision.

Place the room around a useful viewpoint

Rotate the small model until the entrance faces you, enlarge it, then bring the relevant area toward your position. Grip movement and height adjustment help line up a view across a counter or through a partition. Move your head to inspect occlusion, then reposition the model for the next viewpoint.

Position the model with your controllers

Hold a grip
Grab the model and move it with the controller.
Right stick left or right
Rotate the model in 30 degree steps.
Right stick up or down
Enlarge or reduce the model visually.
Left stick up or down
Move the model closer or farther away.
Left stick left or right
Raise or lower the model.
Move your head
Inspect from different viewpoints within your headset boundary.

The controls position the model around you. The ordinary browser view is restored when you leave the headset session.

SketchUp SKP VR questions

â–¶Can a client open the SKP directly for a VR review?

Yes. A WebXR headset browser can open a locally available SKP in the viewer and enter VR. File access on the headset is the preparation step; the viewer handles reading the model directly.

â–¶What makes a useful SketchUp model for a headset session?

Include the geometry that answers the design question: an entrance and reception desk, a furnished room, or a building and its immediate context. Check the model in the ordinary viewer and simplify dense components when the target headset needs a lighter scene.

â–¶How can I keep a confidential model local during VR review?

Open your file directly on the device running the headset browser. The browser parses it locally, so a confidential model stays on that device during local viewing. No conversion, no plugin, no upload, no account. The optional Send to VR headset workflow on a computer uploads a local file after your confirmation to create a hosted share and pairing code. Choose direct local opening on the headset when your model needs to stay on that device. An already hosted model can also be opened from its URL.

â–¶How does model scale work in this VR viewer?

The initial VR stage fits the largest model dimension to 1.5 metres. The right controller stick changes the presentation scale visually. Use checked dimensions in the ordinary viewer for exact sizing; the current VR controls provide adjustable presentation scale.

â–¶What does the headset browser need?

It needs immersive WebXR support and access to the model file. Open the viewer in a compatible headset browser, select the file and use the VR control after loading. The ordinary 3D view is also available on desktop and mobile browsers.
