Create 3D models with AI
What it does
Create with AI is a side panel in the Innerscene 3D viewer. Describe an object or a person, and add a photo if you have one. Claude (from Anthropic) or GPT (from OpenAI) writes the model: an OpenSCAD program for objects, or body, clothing and pose settings for the MakeHuman engine for people. Your browser builds the model, renders six views of it and shows them to the AI, which checks its work and fixes what it sees. The result opens in the viewer at real size, ready to inspect, change and export.
It works well for furniture, light fittings, products, architectural parts and people. You use your own Anthropic or OpenAI API key, and the provider bills you directly.
Open Create with AIPages for each kind of model, format and app, with example prompts: AI generator.
Get an API key from Anthropic (Claude)
The short version is below. For every step in detail, what each key message in the panel means and how to fix it, read How to get an API key for the AI generator.
- Open the Claude Console at platform.claude.com (formerly console.anthropic.com) and sign in or sign up. The Console is the developer account. It is separate from the Claude app at claude.ai, though you can sign up with the same email address. A Claude Pro subscription does not include API credit.
- Go to Billing and press Buy credits. $5 is enough for dozens of models. A Claude Max, Ultra or Team plan includes monthly API credit you can link to the Console from claude.ai.
- Set a monthly spend limit under Spend limits on the same Billing page, so a mistake can never cost more than you planned.
- Open API keys, press Create key, give it a name (for example “Innerscene viewer”), pick a workspace for it and copy it. The Console shows the whole key only once. Anthropic keys start with
sk-ant-. - In the viewer, open Create with AI, choose Use your own AI key, pick the Anthropic (Claude) tab, paste the key and press Check and save key.
Get an API key from OpenAI (GPT)
- Open the OpenAI platform at platform.openai.com and sign in. You can use your ChatGPT login, but a ChatGPT subscription does not include API credit.
- Go to Billing and buy at least $5 of credit, which both OpenAI models in the panel need.
- Set a monthly spend limit in Limits.
- Open API keys, press Create new secret key and copy it. OpenAI keys start with
sk-. - In the viewer, open Create with AI, choose Use your own AI key, pick the OpenAI (GPT) tab, paste the key and press Check and save key.
What it costs
Innerscene does not charge for Create with AI. You pay Anthropic or OpenAI directly from the credit on your account, at their published API prices. A typical model costs:
- Standard quality: about $0.05 to $0.30 per model.
- Detailed quality: up to about $1 per model. The AI thinks longer, adds more finish and checks its work more, so it is also slower.
Each follow-up message costs about the same again. The panel shows a running estimate for the session (“This session: $0.42 over 9 calls”); the provider’s bill is the final figure.
You choose the AI model in the panel:
| Model | Provider | List price per million tokens (input / output) |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Opus 5.5 | Anthropic | $4 / $20 |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | Anthropic | $2 / $10 |
| GPT-6 Astra | OpenAI | $10 / $50 |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | OpenAI | $2 / $10 |
Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra are the defaults and give the best results. Claude Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol cost less and suit simple objects. Prices change; check the provider’s pricing page.
Refine your model
Start with a clear description: what the object is, its overall size, its materials and colours. Then keep talking to it. Each message changes the current model, and the AI builds and checks it again (up to five builds per message). Follow-ups that work well:
- “Make it 90 cm tall and 45 cm deep.”
- “Make the legs thinner and taper them toward the floor.”
- “Use brushed brass for the frame and dark green velvet for the seat.”
- “Add a drawer under the top with a round wooden knob.”
- “Round all the edges by about 5 mm.”
- Add a photo. Press Add photo to include a picture of the object or person you want. The AI uses it as a reference for shape, proportions and colours.
- Go back to an earlier version. Every build in the conversation has Open this version in the viewer. Open the one you liked and keep refining from there in your next message.
- Use the sliders. An object opens as an editable OpenSCAD program. The viewer’s Parameters panel lists its main dimensions and options as sliders and fields, and the model rebuilds as you move them, with no AI call and no cost.
- Stop. Press Stop while the AI is working to end that request. You pay only for what it had already used.
People
Describe height, age, build, clothes and pose, for example “a 40-year-old woman, 168 cm, casual clothes and sneakers, waving”. A person opens as a textured GLB model at the height you gave. You can then ask for changes such as “make him sit” or “add a jacket”.
Limits
- People wear clothes from a fixed library, so some garments are approximated by the closest match.
- Objects are built from geometric solids. Complex organic shapes (animals, plants, sculpted faces) are hard, and come out simplified.
- Fine text, logos and detailed patterns are beyond what the AI can draw.
Export to other formats
Once the model is in the viewer, open the Export menu in the toolbar and choose a format. The file is made in your browser and downloads straight away.
- 3D printing: STL, 3MF, AMF
- CAD and BIM: STEP, ACIS SAT, DWG, DXF, Rhino 3DM, IFC; also 2D DWG and DXF drawings of a view or a three-view sheet

Models for SketchUp
Choose For SketchUp (.skp) in the panel’s Made for picker, or end your request with “for SketchUp”. The AI then organises the model the way an experienced SketchUp modeller would: every part is a named group or component, repeated parts (chair legs, shelves, identical chairs) are components with one definition placed many times, a few tags sort the parts, and materials have real names such as Oak or Brushed steel. Each version in the conversation has a Download .skp link, and the Export menu has SketchUp 2017+ (.skp).
Open the file in SketchUp 2017 or later, or in SketchUp Viewer, with File > Open. Flat sides arrive as single faces and curved surfaces get soft, smooth edges. The 2017 format has no tag folders, so a tag named “Furniture/Chairs” keeps that full name. The web version of SketchUp opens files from your computer in its own way, depending on your plan.
You can also download the OpenSCAD source (.scad) of an object and keep editing it in OpenSCAD, or open it in the viewer again later; its sliders come back with it.
Your key and your privacy
- Your API key stays in this browser. It is saved in this browser’s local storage on this device and sent only to Anthropic or OpenAI. It is never sent to Innerscene. Other devices and other browsers never have it.
- Your conversation goes straight to the provider. What you type, the photos you add and the AI replies travel directly between your browser and Anthropic or OpenAI. Innerscene does not receive them.
- The model is built on your computer. The OpenSCAD program or MakeHuman settings are turned into a 3D model and rendered locally in your browser.
Remove your key
Press Forget key in the panel, or clear this site’s data in your browser settings. To retire a key completely, delete it on the Anthropic API keys or OpenAI API keys page. More in Keeping your key safe.
Usage statistics Innerscene collects
To see how the panel is used and what it costs people, the viewer sends Innerscene:
- which steps of the panel are used (opening it, saving a key, sending a request, opening a model, sending a report);
- for each request: the AI model and quality chosen, the number of AI calls, token counts, the estimated cost, whether a model was produced, whether a photo was attached, and how long it took.
These records contain no prompt text, no AI replies, no photos and no key.
Sent only when you choose
- Report a problem or send feedback sends your message, the AI model you used and the session cost. Tick the boxes to also send your conversation (what you typed, any photos, the AI replies and the scripts it wrote) and the generated models with their preview images. Your email is optional. Your API key is never included.
- Submit to the Innerscene library uploads the model you choose to Innerscene, where it is reviewed before it appears in the 3D Parts Library. See the library terms.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Create with AI free?
- Innerscene does not charge for it. The AI runs on your own Anthropic or OpenAI account, and the provider bills you for what you use: usually $0.05 to $0.30 per model at Standard quality, and up to about $1 at Detailed.
- Can I use my Claude or ChatGPT subscription?
- Not directly. Create with AI needs an API key from the developer side of each company (platform.claude.com or platform.openai.com), which has its own prepaid credit. Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus do not include API credit. Claude Max, Ultra and Team plans include a monthly API credit that you can link to your Claude Console account.
- Does Innerscene see my API key or my prompts?
- No. Your key is saved only in this browser and is sent only to Anthropic or OpenAI. Your prompts, photos and the AI replies go straight from your browser to the provider. Innerscene receives them only if you tick the boxes in Report a problem or send feedback.
- Which file formats can I export?
- Everything in the viewer Export menu, including STL, 3MF and AMF for 3D printing, STEP, SAT, DWG, DXF, IFC and Rhino 3DM for CAD and BIM, SketchUp (.skp) for SketchUp 2017 and later, and FBX, OBJ, GLB/glTF, DAE, 3DS, USDZ, PLY, VRML and X3D for 3D apps, games and AR.
- How accurate are the dimensions?
- Objects are built at real size in millimetres, and you can ask for exact sizes such as "make it 120 cm wide". For an OpenSCAD model the Parameters panel shows the main dimensions as sliders. Check critical dimensions before you manufacture anything.
- Can it make a model from a photo?
- Yes. Press Add photo, choose a picture of an object or a person and describe what you want. The AI uses the photo as a reference; it does not scan it, so expect a clean model that resembles the photo.
- How do I remove my key from this computer?
- Press Forget key in the panel, or clear this site's data in your browser settings. The key lives only in this browser, so other devices and browsers never have it. You can also delete the key in the Claude Console or on the OpenAI platform at any time.
