What Is a Revit File?
A .rvt file is a Revit project: the whole building model with its walls, floors, roofs, stairs, structure and every placed door, window, fixture and piece of furniture, together with the views, sheets and schedules drawn from it. Revit keeps all of this in an element database inside a compound file, and it stores elements as parameters and solids. A project file carries no ready mesh to display.
This viewer reads that database directly and rebuilds the model from the solids Revit computed: walls with their joins and the openings their doors and windows cut, floors, roofs and ceilings, stairs and railings, columns and structural framing, and each placed family instance at its position. The result is grouped into one layer per category, so walls, doors or furniture can be shown and hidden on their own.
A .rfa file is a loadable family, a single component such as a light fixture or a chair, and it opens as that component about its own origin. Try the demo building to see a small Revit project rebuilt in the browser.
Who Uses Revit Files?
Architects, structural and MEP engineers and contractors model buildings in Revit, and manufacturers publish their products as Revit families. Compatibility & Format Notes
Projects (.rvt), families (.rfa) and templates (.rte, .rft) saved by Revit 2012 and later open natively, up to the current release. Files from older releases, and files the reader cannot rebuild, open with a notice that shows the preview image Revit saved in the file and explains what to do next.
Geometry comes from Revit’s own computed solids, so wall joins and door and window openings appear as Revit shows them. Flat and cylindrical faces are rebuilt exactly and freeform surfaces from Revit’s stored tessellation. Coverage depends on the element and the file: an element whose geometry cannot be decoded is drawn as its bounding box or left out, and complex families can come through partly. For a complete, exchange-grade model, an IFC export from Revit opens in the IFC viewer.
Linked models are separate files: a project whose building comes from linked RVTs opens with a notice naming them, and each link can be opened here on its own. Large projects take longer, since the whole database is read in a background worker; files past a size ceiling set by the device’s memory (50, 100 or 200 MB) ask before loading.

No. The viewer reads the Revit file itself and rebuilds the 3D model in your browser. No Revit license, no Autodesk account and no plugin are needed, and the file stays on your device unless you share a link to it.
▶Which Revit versions can I open?
Files saved by Revit 2012 through the current release. Files from earlier releases open with a notice that shows the preview image saved in the file.
▶Can I open a Revit family (.rfa)?
Yes. A loadable family opens as the component itself, centered on its own origin, so you can check a manufacturer’s family before loading it into a project. 2D annotation families (tags and symbols) hold no 3D model, and the viewer says so.
▶Why are some elements missing or shown as boxes?
The viewer rebuilds each element from the solids Revit stored. When an element’s geometry cannot be decoded it is drawn as its bounding box or left out, and some complex families come through partly. An IFC export from Revit opens in the IFC viewer as a complete exchange model.
▶Why does my project open with a notice about linked models?
Its building comes from linked Revit files, which are stored as separate files and are not part of the one you opened. The notice names them: open each linked RVT here to see it.
▶Is this Revit viewer really free?

No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.
