How to convert PAGES to DOCX

  1. 1

    Open your .pages file

Drag it onto the viewer above, or click "Open a PAGES File". Files up to 200 MB open directly; the parse runs in a worker so the page stays responsive.

  2. 2

    Click Download DOCX

Once the file is open, the Download DOCX button sits at the bottom right of the viewer. The Export menu in the toolbar has every other format.

  3. 3

    Download

The .docx is written in the browser and saved straight to your downloads folder. No queue, no email, no watermark.

What survives the conversion

A file conversion is a translation, and formats do not carry the same things. Here is exactly what moves from PAGES into DOCX, and what does not.

Text and labelsKeptThe text is written into the modern .docx package unchanged: every paragraph, in any language, with its character formatting.
FormattingKeptStyles, numbered and bulleted lists and paragraph formatting carry across. The conversion runs in your browser, and fonts keep the names the document uses.
TablesKeptTables keep their rows, columns, merged cells and borders.
PicturesKeptEmbedded pictures are carried into the .docx as image files.
PagesReducedText boxes become ordinary paragraphs after the paragraph they were anchored to, and pictures that float beside the text get a paragraph of their own. Headers, footers, footnotes and charts are not read from a Pages file, and Word may break pages in slightly different places than Pages.

What the DOCX writer emits: The Pages document is read in your browser and saved as an Office Open XML .docx: text with its paragraph and character styles, numbered lists, tables, inline and floating pictures, the text of text boxes as paragraphs, page breaks, and the page size and margins. Headers, footers, footnotes and charts are not read from a Pages file. Edits you make before exporting are included. Nothing is uploaded.

The source: Apple Pages Document (.pages)

An Apple Pages document laid out at its page size and margins: text in any language with its paragraph and character styles (font, size, bold, italic, underline, colour, alignment, indents and spacing), numbered lists, inline and floating pictures, tables with their text and numbers, text boxes and page breaks. Headers, footers, footnotes and charts are not shown.

Your file never leaves your computer

Both the PAGES parser and the DOCX writer are JavaScript and WebAssembly running in your own browser tab. There is no upload step, no server-side conversion queue, and no copy of your file anywhere but your machine. That matters for drawings under NDA, for client work, and for anything you would not email to a stranger.
