How to convert DOC to DOCX
- 1
Open your .doc file
Drag it onto the viewer above, or click "Open a DOC File". Files up to 200 MB open directly; the parse runs in a worker so the page stays responsive.
- 2
Pick Word Document in the Export menu
Click Export in the toolbar, then DOCX (.docx).
- 3
Download
The .docx is written in the browser and saved straight to your downloads folder. No queue, no email, no watermark.
What survives the conversion
A file conversion is a translation, and formats do not carry the same things. Here is exactly what moves from DOC into DOCX, and what does not.
| Text and labels | Kept | The text is written into the modern .docx package unchanged: every paragraph, in any language, with its character formatting. |
|---|---|---|
| Formatting | Kept | Styles, numbered and bulleted lists and paragraph formatting carry across. The conversion runs in your browser, and fonts keep the names the document uses. |
| Tables | Kept | Tables keep their rows, columns, merged cells and borders. |
| Pictures | Kept | Embedded pictures are carried into the .docx as image files. |
| Pages | Reduced | Text boxes, comments and macros in the .doc are not carried over, and Word may break pages in slightly different places. |
What the DOCX writer emits: The Word 97-2003 document is read in your browser and saved as an Office Open XML .docx: text, character and paragraph formatting, the style sheet, lists, tables, headers, footers, footnotes and pictures. Edits you make before exporting are included. Nothing is uploaded.
The source: Word 97-2003 Document (.doc, .dot)
A Word 97-2003 document or template, paginated the way Word paginates it: text in any language, character and paragraph formatting, the style sheet, numbered and bulleted lists, tables, headers, footers, footnotes and pictures. Text boxes and comments are not shown.
The target: Word Document (.docx)
The current Word format: opens in every version of Word since 2007, in Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages.
Opens in: Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, Pages, any editor that reads .docx.
Your file never leaves your computer
Both the DOC parser and the DOCX writer are JavaScript and WebAssembly running in your own browser tab. There is no upload step, no server-side conversion queue, and no copy of your file anywhere but your machine. That matters for drawings under NDA, for client work, and for anything you would not email to a stranger.
