How to convert ODT to DOCX
- 1
Open your .odt file
Drag it onto the viewer above, or click "Open an ODT File". Files up to 200 MB open directly; the parse runs in a worker so the page stays responsive.
- 2
Click Download DOCX
Once the file is open, the Download DOCX button sits at the bottom right of the viewer. The Export menu in the toolbar has every other format.
- 3
Download
The .docx is written in the browser and saved straight to your downloads folder. No queue, no email, no watermark.
What survives the conversion
A file conversion is a translation, and formats do not carry the same things. Here is exactly what moves from ODT into DOCX, and what does not.
| Text and labels | Kept | The text is written into the modern .docx package unchanged: every paragraph, in any language, with its character formatting. |
|---|---|---|
| Formatting | Kept | Styles, numbered and bulleted lists and paragraph formatting carry across. The conversion runs in your browser, and fonts keep the names the document uses. |
| Tables | Kept | Tables keep their rows, columns, merged cells and borders. |
| Pictures | Kept | Embedded pictures are carried into the .docx as image files. |
| Pages | Reduced | Headers, footers, text boxes and the page size and margins carry across. Footnotes and endnotes become numbered paragraphs at the end of the document, and drawn shapes and charts are left out. Word may break pages in slightly different places than Writer. |
What the DOCX writer emits: The OpenDocument text document is read in your browser and saved as an Office Open XML .docx: text with its paragraph and character styles, headings with their outline numbers, numbered and bulleted lists, tables with merged cells, borders and fills, pictures, text boxes, page breaks, the header and footer, and the page size and margins. Footnotes become paragraphs at the end of the document, and drawn shapes and charts are left out. Edits you make before exporting are included. Nothing is uploaded.
The source: OpenDocument Text (.odt, .ott, .fodt, .odm, .sxw, .stw)
An OpenDocument text document (LibreOffice or OpenOffice Writer) laid out at its page size and margins: text in any language with its paragraph and character styles, headings with their outline numbers, numbered and bulleted lists, tables with merged cells, borders and fills, pictures, text boxes, page breaks, headers and footers, with footnotes listed after the text. Drawn shapes and charts are not shown.
The target: Word Document (.docx)
The current Word format: opens in every version of Word since 2007, in Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages.
Opens in: Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, Pages, any editor that reads .docx.
Your file never leaves your computer
Both the ODT parser and the DOCX writer are JavaScript and WebAssembly running in your own browser tab. There is no upload step, no server-side conversion queue, and no copy of your file anywhere but your machine. That matters for drawings under NDA, for client work, and for anything you would not email to a stranger.
