How to convert ODT to HTML
- 1
Open your .odt file
Drag it onto the viewer above, or click "Open an ODT File". Files up to 200 MB open directly; the parse runs in a worker so the page stays responsive.
- 2
Click Download HTML
Once the file is open, the Download HTML button sits at the bottom right of the viewer. The Export menu in the toolbar has every other format.
- 3
Download
The .html is written in the browser and saved straight to your downloads folder. No queue, no email, no watermark.
What survives the conversion
A file conversion is a translation, and formats do not carry the same things. Here is exactly what moves from ODT into HTML, and what does not.
| Text and labels | Kept | Headings, paragraphs and list items become real HTML text with their outline and list numbers, so the page can be searched, copied and read aloud by a screen reader. Text boxes keep their text. |
|---|---|---|
| Formatting | Kept | Fonts, sizes, colors, bold, italic, underline and highlight, with each paragraph’s indents, spacing, alignment, borders and shading. |
| Tables | Kept | Tables keep their column widths, merged cells, borders and cell shading. |
| Pictures | Kept | Pictures are embedded in the page as data, so the one file carries them. EMF and WMF drawings, which browsers cannot show, are left out. |
| Pages | Reduced | Each page of the document becomes a sheet of paper in the page, with its header and footer, and the footnotes are listed at the end of the document. Drawn shapes and charts are not read from an OpenDocument file, so the page does not have them either. Lines break where the reader’s fonts put them, so a line can end on a different word than in Writer, and on a phone the text reflows to fit the screen. |
What the HTML writer emits: A single .html file holding the data and everything needed to show it. A model or point cloud is embedded as a base64 GLB with a small three.js viewer: orbit, pan, zoom, fit to view and a ground grid. A drawing is embedded as SVG with pan, zoom and a layer list. A workbook becomes HTML tables, one tab per sheet, and a Word document becomes HTML text with its headings, lists, tables and pictures, with no script in the page at all. The page loads nothing from the network and runs no code from the source file.
The source: OpenDocument Text (.odt, .ott, .fodt, .odm, .sxw, .stw)
An OpenDocument text document (LibreOffice or OpenOffice Writer) laid out at its page size and margins: text in any language with its paragraph and character styles, headings with their outline numbers, numbered and bulleted lists, tables with merged cells, borders and fills, pictures, text boxes, page breaks, headers and footers, with footnotes listed after the text. Drawn shapes and charts are not shown.
The target: Self-contained HTML (.html)
One web page that opens offline in any browser. Send it to anyone: there is no app to install and no account to create.
Opens in: Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox, on desktop, tablet and phone.
Your file never leaves your computer
Both the ODT parser and the HTML writer are JavaScript and WebAssembly running in your own browser tab. There is no upload step, no server-side conversion queue, and no copy of your file anywhere but your machine. That matters for drawings under NDA, for client work, and for anything you would not email to a stranger.
