What Is an Apple Pages File?
Pages is Apple’s word processor, included with every Mac, iPhone and iPad. Since 2013 it saves each document as a ZIP package: the text, styles, tables and layout in compressed binary parts under Index/, the pictures under Data/, and a picture of the first page. Outside Apple’s devices almost nothing opens it, which is why a .pages attachment so often arrives as a file nobody can read.
This viewer reads the document with its own code, in your browser: the text with its paragraph and character styles, numbered lists, pictures where they sit, tables, text boxes and page breaks. It then lays the document out with the same engine as the Word viewer and editor, at the document’s page size and margins.
The pages can be saved as a PDF, a Word .docx, PNG or JPG images, or a self-contained HTML page, and the document can be edited in the same editor as a .docx.
Who Uses Apple Pages Files?
Students who write assignments on a Mac or an iPad, the teachers and offices that receive them on Windows, and anyone sent a .pages file with no Apple device at hand. Pages is free on Apple devices, so it is the default word processor for many school and home users.

Compatibility & Format Notes
Reads documents from Pages 5 (2013) and later, on Mac, iPhone and iPad, including a .pages package zipped from its folder. Carried over: text in any language, paragraph and character styles (font, size, bold, italic, underline, colour, alignment, indents and spacing), numbered lists, inline and floating pictures, tables with their text and numbers, text boxes, page breaks, and the page size and margins.
Not shown: headers and footers, footnotes, charts, equations, and shapes without text. Lines can break in slightly different places than in Pages, because the text is set in metric-compatible open fonts.
A document whose text cannot be read, and a Keynote presentation, show a notice with the picture of the first page or slide that the app saved in the file. For an exact copy, open the document in Pages and choose File > Export To > Word or PDF.

Your Files Stay on Your Computer

Frequently Asked Questions
▶How do I open a .pages file on Windows?
Drop it on this page. The viewer reads the file in your browser and shows it page by page, the same on Windows, Android, a Chromebook or Linux. No Mac, iCloud account or install is needed.
▶Can I convert a Pages document to Word?
Yes. Open it here and click Download: the document is saved as a .docx that Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice open. Choose Download as PDF from the arrow beside it for a vector PDF.
▶Does it look the same as in Pages?
Close. Text, styles, pictures and tables are laid out at the document’s page size and margins, in open fonts with the same metrics, so lines can break a little differently. Headers, footers, footnotes and charts are not shown.
▶Can I edit a Pages document here?
Yes. The document opens in the Word editor: type and delete text, change fonts, styles and lists, edit tables, add pictures and links, and download the result as a .docx or PDF.
▶What about Keynote presentations?
A .key file shows the picture of its first slide that Keynote saves in the file, with a notice. For every slide, export the presentation from Keynote as a PDF and open that here. Numbers spreadsheets open in the spreadsheet viewer.
▶Is this Pages viewer really free?
Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.
▶Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.
▶Can I convert to another format?
Yes. Click Download to save the document as a .docx, or choose Download as PDF from the arrow beside it. Export has the same PDF, the pages as PNG or JPG images, and the document as one self-contained HTML page.
▶Can I embed this viewer on my own site?
Yes. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate a one-line <iframe> snippet you can paste into any HTML page. You can choose whether the embed shows the viewer’s toolbar.
