Summary
This study investigates the circuit mechanisms underlying Stage 1 retinal waves and their recruitment of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), which are critical to circadian photoentrainment. Findings on ipRGC developmental biology may inform understanding of how the circadian light-sensing system is established early in development.
Key Findings
- Stage 1 retinal waves robustly recruit ipRGCs as well as the general RGC population
- Stage 1 and Stage 2 retinal waves do not contribute to the developmental cell death of ipRGCs
Categories
The Science of Light: Examines ipRGC recruitment during retinal wave activity, providing insight into photoreceptor biology and early development of melanopsin-containing ganglion cells.
