Abstract

Summary

This tutorial reviews the radical-pair mechanism by which cryptochrome proteins in bird retinas, activated by light, may enable magnetoreception in migratory songbirds. While focused on avian sensory biology, it provides foundational context on cryptochrome photochemistry, which is relevant to understanding light-sensitive biological timing mechanisms more broadly.
