What Is a Word 97-2003 Document File?
Before Word 2007 introduced the .docx package, Word saved documents as .doc: one binary file in the Compound File format, the same container Excel 97-2003 .xls and PowerPoint .ppt files use. Inside it, a WordDocument stream holds the text and a table stream holds everything that describes it: the piece table that says where each run of text lives, character and paragraph formatting, the style sheet, fonts, lists, sections, headers and footers, footnotes, and fields. Pictures sit in a third stream. A .dot is a template in the same format.
Like a .docx, a .doc stores no pages. Where a line wraps and where page four begins come from a layout pass that resolves each paragraph’s style, measures every character against its font and flows the text down the page.
This viewer reads the binary file in your browser, converts it into the same document model as a .docx, and runs the same layout pass as the Word viewer and editor, so the document paginates the way Word paginates it. The pages can be saved as a PDF, PNG, JPG or a self-contained HTML page.
The converted document can also be edited in the same editor as a .docx: type and delete text, change fonts, styles and lists, edit tables, headers and footnotes, record tracked changes, and add a signature, initials or the date. Download saves the result as a .docx that current Word opens, or as a PDF, and the document can be printed or shared as a link that opens it with your changes.
Who Uses Word 97-2003 Document Files?
Anyone with documents from before 2007: archived contracts and specifications, theses and term papers, forms and letters from government and university systems that still export .doc, and attachments from colleagues on older Office versions. They arrive on phones, Chromebooks and Macs with no copy of Word, which is where a browser viewer is useful.
Common Use Cases
- Read an old .doc attachment without Word or an Office subscription
- Open a .doc on a phone, Chromebook or Mac
- Check an archived contract, specification or thesis page by page
- Copy text out of a .doc in Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Chinese or any other script
- Edit an old .doc and save it as a .docx that current Word opens
- Sign a .doc and download it as .docx or PDF
- Turn a .doc into a PDF, or print it page by page
- Save the pages of a .doc as PNG or JPG images
- Turn a .doc into one HTML page that opens in any browser
Features
Word 97 to 2003
Documents and .dot templates saved by Word 97, 2000, XP and 2003, by later Word in the 97-2003 format, and by LibreOffice and WPS Office.
Paginated Like Word
The .doc is converted to the same document model as a .docx and laid out by the same engine, so pages break where Word breaks them.
Edit the Document
Click in the text and type. Change fonts, sizes, colours, styles and lists, edit tables, headers, footers and footnotes, and use Find and replace, with undo and redo.

Compatibility & Format Notes
Reads documents and templates saved by Word 97, 2000, XP (2002), 2003 and every later Word that saves in the 97-2003 format, plus the .doc files written by LibreOffice, WPS Office and document systems. Fast-saved files, which Word 97-2003 could append changes to without rewriting the whole file, are read through their piece table.
Carried over: text in any language, character formatting (bold, italic, underline, strike, caps, size, font, colour, highlight, superscript and subscript), paragraph formatting (alignment, indents, spacing, tabs, borders and shading), the full style sheet with its headings, numbered and bulleted lists, tables with merged cells, borders and shading, page size, margins, orientation and columns per section, headers and footers, footnotes and endnotes, page-number fields, hyperlinks, and inline and floating pictures (PNG, JPEG, EMF, WMF, BMP and TIFF).
Not shown: text boxes, drawing shapes without a picture, and comments. Files from Word 6.0 and Word 95 use an older structure, and password-protected files are encrypted; both show a notice asking for a copy saved from Word as .docx.
Edits are saved as a .docx: the binary .doc format is read, and the edited document is written in the format Word has used since 2007. Download as PDF writes vector pages with the fonts embedded.

Frequently Asked Questions
▶How do I open a .doc file without Word?
Drop it on this page. The viewer reads the file in your browser and shows it page by page, the same on Windows, a Mac, a Chromebook, Linux or a phone. No Office installation or account is needed.
▶Does the page count match Word?
That is the aim. The .doc is converted to the same document model as a .docx and laid out by the same engine as the Word viewer, which is tested page by page against Word’s own output. Documents that use fonts with no metric-compatible open equivalent can still break lines in slightly different places.
▶Can I edit a .doc file here?
Yes. Click in the text and type. The same tools as for a .docx work on a .doc: fonts, sizes, colours and highlight, bold, italic and underline, paragraph styles and headings, alignment, lists, tables, pictures, links, Find and replace, headers, footers and footnotes, Track changes, and a signature with your initials and the date. Every change can be undone.
▶How do I save an edited .doc?
Click Download. The edited document is saved as a .docx, which Word 2007 and later open directly. Choose Download as PDF from the arrow beside it for a PDF, or click Print.
▶Will Cyrillic, Greek or Asian text show correctly?
Yes. Word 97-2003 stores text as Unicode, or as 8-bit text in the document’s code page, and both are decoded to the original characters.
▶Which .doc files cannot be opened?
Files from Word 6.0 and Word 95, which use an older structure, and password-protected files. Both show a notice: open the file in Word or LibreOffice and save it as .docx, then open that copy here.
▶Is this DOC viewer really free?
Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.
▶Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.
▶Can I convert to another format?
Yes. Click Download to save the document as a .docx, or choose Download as PDF from the arrow beside it. Export has the same PDF, the pages as PNG or JPG images, and the document as one self-contained HTML page.
▶Can I embed this viewer on my own site?
Yes. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate a one-line <iframe> snippet you can paste into any HTML page. You can choose whether the embed shows the viewer’s toolbar.
