Convert CMX to DWG (Free)

Drop a .cmx file, click Export, download the .dwg. AutoCAD native. Hand it to anyone who asked for "the CAD file".

Also converts DXF, PDF, SVG, PNG, JPG, HTML from the same file.

Runs in your browser. No upload, no signup, nothing to install.

Also from Innerscene: Circadian Lab, a free lighting calculator for room illuminance, melanopic EML, and glare.

Your CMX file is read and converted on your own machine. It is never uploaded.

How to convert CMX to DWG

  1. 1

    Open your .cmx file

Drag it onto the viewer above, or click "Open a CMX File". Files up to 200 MB open directly; the parse runs in a worker so the page stays responsive.

  2. 2

    Click Download DWG

Once the file is open, the Download DWG button sits at the bottom right of the viewer. The Export menu in the toolbar has every other format.

  3. 3

    Download

The .dwg is written in the browser and saved straight to your downloads folder. No queue, no email, no watermark.

What survives the conversion

A file conversion is a translation, and formats do not carry the same things. Here is exactly what moves from CMX into DWG, and what does not.

GeometryKeptBoth are 2-D vector formats, so the line work transfers as line work: lines, polylines, arcs, circles and filled regions stay editable geometry rather than becoming a picture.
Colors and materialsReducedCMX can hold full color and DWG holds one color per object, so materials are flattened to that.
Layers and structureKeptLayers survive as real layers in the DWG file, so you can still isolate and toggle them.
Units and scaleKeptDWG stores an explicit unit, so the drawing opens at true size without rescaling.
Text and labelsReducedLabels, dimension text and notes come across as editable DWG TEXT at their original height and rotation. R12 text is single line and anchored left, so a multi-line note becomes one line per row and a centered label sits left of where it was.
Fills and hatchingReducedA hatched or filled region exports as its outline plus SOLID fill triangles. The hatch pattern itself is not reconstructed as a live hatch object, so it will not re-scale with the drawing.

What the DWG writer emits: The same geometry as the DXF export, written as a binary AutoCAD 2000 drawing by our own DWG writer, right in your browser. Layers, colors and units carry across, and nothing leaves your machine.

The source: Corel Presentation Exchange (CMX) (.cmx)

Every page of the drawing as vector shapes at its real size in millimetres: curves, rectangles with rounded corners, ellipses, arcs and pie slices with their uniform and linear or radial fountain fills (pattern, bitmap and texture fills as a tint) and outlines with width, colour, caps, joins and dashes, in groups on the drawing’s layers. Text, placed bitmaps, clipping and arrowheads are not read. 16-bit and 32-bit files, RIFF and RIFX, also when saved with a .cdr name.

The target: AutoCAD Drawing (.dwg)

AutoCAD native. Hand it to anyone who asked for "the CAD file".

Opens in: AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, Revit, Civil 3D, ZWCAD.

Your file never leaves your computer

Both the CMX parser and the DWG writer are JavaScript and WebAssembly running in your own browser tab. There is no upload step, no server-side conversion queue, and no copy of your file anywhere but your machine. That matters for drawings under NDA, for client work, and for anything you would not email to a stranger.

Frequently asked questions

▶Is this CMX to DWG converter free?

Yes. No signup, no watermark, no per-file limit and no paid tier. Innerscene.

▶Is my CMX file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read with the browser file API and converted in the same tab. Nothing is sent to a server unless you explicitly click Share, which is a separate, opt-in feature.

▶Will my colors and materials survive the DWG export?

CMX can hold full color and DWG holds one color per object, so materials are flattened to that.

▶Do layers and named parts carry into the DWG file?

Layers survive as real layers in the DWG file, so you can still isolate and toggle them.

▶Will the DWG open at the right size?

DWG stores an explicit unit, so the drawing opens at true size without rescaling.

▶How large a CMX file can I convert?

Up to 200 MB, and the ceiling adapts to how much memory your device reports. The conversion runs on your own hardware, so a desktop with plenty of RAM will handle more than a phone.

▶Can I convert DWG back to CMX?

Not here. We read CMX and write DWG, but not the reverse. the universal 3D viewer

▶Which browsers does it work in?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. No plugin and no extension.
