What Is an Illustrator File?
.ai is the native format of Adobe Illustrator, and one extension covers two formats. Illustrator 9 and later (2000 and newer, including every Creative Cloud release) save a PDF-compatible copy of the artwork inside the file, which this viewer renders as vector pages. Illustrator 8 and earlier wrote a PostScript dialect closely related to EPS, which the viewer reads directly into paths, layers and text.
Logos, packaging dielines, signage, maps, technical illustrations and vinyl-cutter artwork are routinely sent as .ai files, and the person receiving one often has no Illustrator licence. Here the artwork is drawn at its real size, with zoom and pan, and can be exported as SVG, PDF, DXF or a PNG or JPG image.
Illustrator templates (.ait) open the same way. For plain PDFs use the PDF viewer, and for EPS and PostScript the EPS viewer.
Who Uses Illustrator Files?
Print shops and sign makers receiving customer artwork, packaging and label designers, engineers and fabricators sent a drawing as .ai, makers who need the outline for a laser or vinyl cutter, and marketing teams checking a logo file on a computer with no Adobe software.
Common Use Cases
- Open a logo or illustration sent as .ai without Illustrator
- Check artwork from a client before it goes to print or to the cutter
- Export the artwork as SVG for a website
- Turn Illustrator linework into DXF for laser, CNC or vinyl cutting
- Save a PDF or PNG of the artwork for a proof or an email
- Read an older Illustrator 8 or earlier file

Save the artwork as SVG for a website or another editor.
Export to PDF, PNG and JPG
Save a vector PDF page or an image for a proof or an email.
Export to DXF and DWG
Send linework to laser, CNC and vinyl cutting as DXF, or as DWG from our server.
Nothing Is Uploaded
The file is read on your device. It leaves only if you choose to share a link.
Share and Embed
Send a link that opens the artwork in any browser, or put the viewer on your own page with one iframe.
Compatibility & Format Notes
Files saved by Illustrator 9 through the current release open when they were saved with Create PDF Compatible File turned on, which is Illustrator’s default. The artwork is read from that standard PDF copy as vector paths, text and images.
A file saved with that option off holds its artwork only in Illustrator’s private data, which is not readable outside Illustrator. The viewer says so and names the option to turn on when you re-save, or you can export an SVG or PDF from Illustrator and open that.
Illustrator 8 and earlier files are read from their PostScript paths, fills, strokes and layers, and drawn on white at the size of the artwork.
Embed on Your Website
Add this viewer to your own site with a single line of HTML. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate an embed code, or use the snippet below with your own file URL.
Your Files Stay on Your Computer
Your Illustrator files are parsed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared unless you explicitly click the Share button. Shared files are hosted for 90 days then deleted.
Frequently Asked Questions
▶How do I open an .ai file without Illustrator?
Drop it on this page. The viewer reads the artwork in your browser and draws it. You can then save it as SVG, PDF, DXF, PNG or JPG from the Export menu.
▶Why does it say the file has no PDF-compatible copy?
The file was saved with Create PDF Compatible File turned off, so the artwork exists only in Illustrator’s private format. In Illustrator, choose Save As, turn the option on, and save again, or export the artwork as SVG or PDF.
▶Can I convert an .ai file to SVG?
Yes. Open the file and choose SVG in the Export menu. Paths, fills, strokes and gradients are written as SVG elements, and the drawing keeps its size.
▶Can I get Illustrator linework into CAD?
Yes. Export as DXF, or as DWG, which is converted on our server from the DXF the viewer writes. This suits laser, CNC and vinyl cutting.
▶Does it open very old Illustrator files?
Yes. Files from Illustrator 8 and earlier are PostScript, and the viewer reads their paths, fills, strokes and layers directly.
▶Is this Illustrator viewer really free?
Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.
▶Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.
▶Can I convert to another format?
Yes, to vector and image formats. Click Export in the toolbar to save the artwork as SVG, PDF (a vector page), DXF, DWG, a self-contained HTML page, or a PNG or JPG image. The viewer does not write .ai files.
▶Can I embed this viewer on my own site?
Yes. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate a one-line <iframe> snippet you can paste into any HTML page. You can choose whether the embed shows the viewer’s toolbar.
