What Is a Visio File?
Microsoft Visio is the diagramming program behind countless flowcharts, org charts, network diagrams, floor plans and process maps. Since Visio 2013 its drawings are saved as .vsdx: a ZIP package of XML parts, like a Word or PowerPoint file, with .vsdm for drawings with macros, .vssx for stencils and .vstx for templates.
Every shape in a page is described by its own sheet of cells: its position, size and rotation, its geometry, its line and fill, its text, and the master shape and styles it takes the rest from. This viewer reads those parts with its own reader, in your browser, and draws each page.
Each page opens at its paper size, picked from a page list. A page exports as PDF, SVG, DXF, PNG or a self-contained HTML page.
Who Uses Visio Files?
Engineers, IT and network administrators, business analysts, facility planners and project managers, and everyone they send a diagram to who has no Visio licence: on a Mac, a Chromebook, a phone, or a Windows PC without Visio.
Common Use Cases
- See a flowchart, org chart or network diagram without Visio
- Look through every page of a multi-page drawing
- Turn a Visio page into a PDF or SVG at its paper size
- Get a floor plan or a layout into CAD as DXF
- Browse the master shapes of a .vssx stencil
- Save a PNG of a diagram for a document or an email
Features
Drawings, Stencils, Templates
.vsdx and .vsdm drawings, .vssx stencils and .vstx templates from Visio 2013 and later and Visio for the web.
Every Page
A page list moves between the pages; background pages draw under the pages that use them.
Shapes and Connectors
Lines, arcs, ellipses, splines and NURBS curves, rotated, flipped and grouped, with connectors and their arrowheads.
Master Shapes
Shapes dropped from a stencil take their geometry, sub-shapes, text and style from the master, with the page’s changes.
Fills, Lines and Themes
Solid and gradient fills, transparency, line weights, colours and dash patterns, and the drawing’s theme colours.
Text
Shape text in its text block, with its font, size, colour, alignment, bold and italic, wrapped to the block.
Pictures
Embedded PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP and Windows metafile pictures are drawn in their shapes.
Page Layers
Visio layers appear in the layer panel, and hidden layers start hidden.
Its Paper Size
Each page is drawn in millimetres at its paper size, which the status line gives.
Export to PDF, SVG, DXF, PNG, JPG, HTML
Save a page as a vector file, a CAD drawing, an image, or one web page that opens offline.
No Visio Needed
An in-house reader that runs in your browser. Nothing to install, and macros never run.
Nothing Is Uploaded
The file is read and drawn entirely in your browser. No account, no upload, no copy of your file on a server.
Compatibility & Format Notes
The viewer reads drawings, stencils and templates saved by Visio 2013 and later and by Visio for the web (.vsdx, .vsdm, .vssx, .vssm, .vstx, .vstm), and the .vsdx files other diagramming tools export. Macros are never run.
It draws each shape’s geometry (lines, arcs, elliptical arcs, ellipses, splines, NURBS curves and polylines), placed, rotated and flipped inside its groups; master shapes and their sub-shapes with the page’s changes; fills with their colour, transparency and gradient; lines with their weight, colour, dash pattern and arrowheads; theme colours; text in its text block with its font, size, colour, alignment, bold and italic; and embedded pictures. Background pages draw under the pages that use them, page layers appear in the layer panel, and hidden layers start hidden. The status line gives the page name and its paper size.
Shadows, glow and other effects are left out, a text block is drawn in the font, size and colour of its first run, and shapes whose look depends on formulas are drawn from the values Visio saved with them. A stencil opens as one sheet of its master shapes with their names. Binary drawings from Visio 2010 and earlier (.vsd) are not read: a notice asks for a .vsdx, PDF or SVG copy. Nothing is sent to a server.
Embed on Your Website
Add this viewer to your own site with a single line of HTML. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate an embed code, or use the snippet below with your own file URL.
Your Files Stay on Your Computer
Your Visio files are parsed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared unless you explicitly click the Share button. Shared files are hosted for 90 days then deleted.
Frequently Asked Questions
▶How do I open a VSDX file without Visio?
Drop it on this page. The viewer reads the drawing in your browser and shows its first page, with the page list for the others, on Windows, a Mac, a Chromebook, Linux or a phone alike. From the Export menu you can save a page as PDF, SVG, DXF, PNG or JPG.
▶Can I open an old .vsd file?
Not directly. Files from Visio 2010 and earlier use a binary format this viewer does not read. Open the file in Visio and save it as a Visio Drawing (.vsdx), or export it as PDF or SVG, and open that file here.
▶How do I move between pages?
Multi-page drawings show a page list above the drawing. Pick a page to open it; background pages are listed after the others.
▶Will the exported PDF or SVG be the right size?
Yes. Each page is drawn at its paper size in millimetres, so the SVG export carries that size and the vector PDF export draws the page at 1:1.
▶Can I open a stencil?
Yes. A .vssx stencil has no pages, so it opens as one sheet of its master shapes, each with its name under it. A template (.vstx) opens on its pages, with its masters as the last page in the list.
▶Is this Visio viewer really free?
Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.
▶Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.
▶Can I convert to another format?
Yes, to vector and image formats. Click Export in the toolbar to save the page as PDF (a vector page at its paper size), SVG, DXF, a self-contained HTML page, or a PNG or JPG image. DWG is also offered: that one is converted on our server from the DXF the viewer writes. The viewer does not write .vsdx.
▶Can I embed this viewer on my own site?
Yes. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate a one-line <iframe> snippet you can paste into any HTML page. You can choose whether the embed shows the viewer’s toolbar.
