What Is a SketchUp Material File?
SketchUp writes a .skm when a material is saved out of the Materials panel, so it can be shared or loaded into another model. The file is a ZIP package: a document.xml describing the material (name, colour, whether it uses a texture), the texture image itself under ref/, and a small swatch preview.
This viewer opens the texture the material paints with, at full size, and names the material on the status line. When the texture is missing or cannot be decoded, SketchUp’s swatch preview is shown and labelled as the swatch. A colour-only material has no image to show, so the viewer gives a notice with the material’s name and its RGB colour.

Compatibility & Format Notes
Reads .skm files saved by SketchUp’s Materials panel. Textures stored as PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF, WebP or TGA are shown (TGA is decoded in the browser). A file is recognised by its materialDocument contents, so a renamed .skm still opens as a material. The viewer shows the texture image as it is stored; it does not apply the material to a model or show its size, opacity or colourising settings. A damaged archive, or a textured material whose file carries no readable image, gets a notice asking for the material to be saved again from SketchUp. To view whole SketchUp models, use the SketchUp viewer.

Frequently Asked Questions
▶What does the viewer show for a .skm file?
The texture image the material paints onto faces, full size, with the material’s name on the status line. When the texture cannot be read, SketchUp’s swatch preview is shown and the status line says it is the swatch.
▶Why does my material open with a notice and no picture?
It is a colour-only material: SketchUp’s Paint Bucket applies a flat colour, and the file has no texture image. The notice names the material and gives its RGB colour. To see it on a model, add it to SketchUp’s Materials panel and paint a face with it.
▶Can I see the material applied to a 3D model?
A .skm holds no geometry, so the viewer shows the texture on its own. To see materials on a model, open the .skp in the SketchUp viewer.
▶Will the viewer take over opening .skm files on my computer?
No. The desktop installers leave .skm files with SketchUp, which imports them into the Materials panel. Drag a .skm onto this page when you want to see its texture.
▶Is this SketchUp material viewer really free?
Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.
▶Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.
▶Can I convert to another format?
A material opens as its texture image, so the export menu offers image formats: click Export to save the texture as a PDF, PNG or JPG.
▶Can I embed this viewer on my own site?
Yes. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate a one-line <iframe> snippet you can paste into any HTML page. You can choose whether the embed shows the viewer’s toolbar.
