What Is a Photoshop File?
PSD is the native format of Adobe Photoshop. A document holds its layers (pixel, text, shape, adjustment and smart object layers, in groups, with masks, blend modes and effects) and, unless the author switched it off, a flattened composite of the whole picture. Documents larger than 30,000 pixels a side or 2 GB are saved in the large document format, .psb.
The format is documented by Adobe and is also written by GIMP, Affinity Photo, Krita, Photopea and many design tools. This viewer reads it with its own decoder, in your browser.
The picture opens at its full pixel size, and each pixel layer can be shown on its own from the layer panel. The image exports as PNG, JPG or PDF.
Who Uses Photoshop Files?
Photographers, retouchers, graphic and web designers, illustrators and print shops, and the clients, developers and colleagues who are sent a .psd and have no Photoshop installed, on a Mac, a Chromebook, Windows or a phone.
Common Use Cases
- See a .psd mockup, logo or photo without Photoshop
- Check a print file before it goes to the printer
- Look at one layer of a design on its own
- Save a PNG or JPG of a design for a web page or an email
- Open a large .psb document from a poster or a panorama
- Find out a document’s colour mode, bit depth and layer count
Features
PSD and PSB
Photoshop documents and large documents (.psb) open alike, from any version of Photoshop.
The Flattened Image
The composite Photoshop saves is shown, so blend modes, adjustments, effects and text look as they do in Photoshop.
Every Colour Mode
RGB, CMYK, Grayscale, Indexed, Lab, Bitmap, Duotone and Multichannel documents.
8, 16 and 32 Bits
Every bit depth Photoshop saves, with raw, PackBits and ZIP compressed data.
Layers One by One
Each pixel layer is listed in the layer panel under its groups and can be shown on its own, at its place.
Status Line
The pixel size, colour mode, bit depth and number of layers are shown under the picture.
Documents Without a Composite
A document saved without its flattened image shows its visible layers laid over each other, or its thumbnail, and says which.
Large Documents
Pictures beyond about 40 megapixels are read at a reduced step that fits the browser’s memory.
Export to PNG, JPG or PDF
Save the picture from the Export menu for a web page, an email or a print.
No Photoshop Needed
An in-house decoder that runs in your browser. Nothing to install.
Nothing Is Uploaded
The document is decoded entirely in your browser. No account, no upload, no copy of your file on a server.
Share and Embed
Send a link that opens the picture in any browser, or put the viewer in your own page with one iframe.
Compatibility & Format Notes
The viewer reads .psd and .psb documents in every colour mode: RGB, CMYK, Grayscale, Indexed (with its transparent colour), Lab, Bitmap, Duotone and Multichannel, at 1, 8, 16 and 32 bits per channel, raw, PackBits or ZIP compressed. It has been checked against 300 sample documents written by Photoshop.
The picture shown is the flattened image the document stores, so blend modes, adjustment layers, effects and text look as they do in Photoshop. The layer panel lists every pixel layer under its group names, starting switched off; switch off “Flattened image” and switch a layer on to see it alone, at its place. The status line gives the pixel size, the colour mode, the bit depth and the number of layers. Colour profiles are not applied, so CMYK and Lab documents can look slightly different from Photoshop’s soft proof. Very large documents are shown at a reduced step.
A document saved with “Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility” turned off has no flattened image. The viewer then lays the visible layers over each other in normal blend mode, or, if there are none, shows the thumbnail stored in the file, and the status line says which. Nothing is sent to a server.

Frequently Asked Questions
▶How do I open a PSD file without Photoshop?
Drop it on this page. The viewer decodes the document in your browser and shows the whole picture, on Windows, a Mac, a Chromebook, Linux or a phone alike. From the Export menu you can save it as PNG, JPG or PDF.
▶Can I see the layers?
Yes. Open the layer panel: every pixel layer is listed under its group names. Switch off “Flattened image” and switch on the layers you want to see them alone, at their place in the document. Text, shape and adjustment layers have no pixels of their own to list; their result is part of the flattened image.
▶Why does my document show a small, blurry picture?
The document was saved without its flattened image and its layers had nothing the viewer could draw, so it shows the thumbnail Photoshop stored, and the status line says “thumbnail”. In Photoshop, turn on “Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility” in Preferences > File Handling, save the document again, and open that file.
▶Do large .psb files open?
Yes. The large document format opens like a .psd. Pictures larger than about 40 megapixels are read at a reduced step to fit in the browser’s memory, and the status line keeps the full pixel size.
▶Is this Photoshop viewer really free?
Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.
▶Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.
▶Can I convert to another format?
Yes, to image formats. Click Export in the toolbar to save the picture as a PNG, a JPG or a PDF. The viewer does not write .psd.
▶Can I embed this viewer on my own site?
Yes. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate a one-line <iframe> snippet you can paste into any HTML page. You can choose whether the embed shows the viewer’s toolbar.
