How to convert Inventor to OBJ

Open your .ipt file

Click Export in the toolbar, then OBJ (.obj).

What survives the conversion
A file conversion is a translation, and formats do not carry the same things. Here is exactly what moves from Inventor into OBJ, and what does not.

What the OBJ writer emits: OBJ plus a companion MTL, zipped together. Each layer becomes an object block and each mesh a named group with its material color. Lines are written as OBJ line elements and point clouds as point elements.

The display mesh Inventor saves inside a part or an assembly: every face of every body as Inventor tessellated it, in the body’s colour, and in an assembly every occurrence placed where the assembly has it, in centimetres, the right way up. Parts with no bodies and assemblies saved without their display cache open to a notice with the document’s own thumbnail.
