What Is a DWF File?
DWF is the format an architect or engineer produces when they “publish” a drawing set from AutoCAD, Revit, or Civil 3D to send for review. Where a .dwg is the editable source, a .dwf is the finished, locked-down deliverable: one file that packages every sheet of the set, at the right scale, with layers and the title block baked in. It is small, it prints exactly, and it can’t be accidentally changed.
Under the hood each 2D sheet is a compressed WHIP vector stream (.w2d); a whole set is a ZIP package with a manifest naming every sheet and the source drawing it came from. DWFx is the newer variant that wraps the same content as Microsoft XPS. This viewer decodes both forms directly — the WHIP vector data and the XPS page markup — so a DWF opens in your browser as a crisp, zoomable drawing — no Autodesk Design Review, no plugins, nothing to install.
Who Uses DWF Files?
DWF is an architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) format. General contractors, plan checkers, and municipal permit offices receive DWF plan sets for markup and approval; consultants send DWF for design review because it shows the drawing exactly as it will plot without handing over the editable DWG. It is produced by AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, Navisworks, and Inventor, and was historically viewed with Autodesk’s free Design Review / DWF Viewer — which this browser tool replaces.

Compatibility & Format Notes
2D DWF renders fully. The viewer decodes WHIP (.w2d) vector graphics across the entire history of the format — from the classic single-stream DWF of the late 1990s (v00.22 and up) through modern multi-sheet DWF 6.x packages (v06.xx) — including lines, polylines, arcs and ellipses, filled areas and hatches, text with fonts, layers, colors, and embedded raster overlays. DWFx sheets, which carry the same drawing as XPS page markup, render through the same path. Multi-sheet sets show a sheet picker in the top-left corner.
3D DWF renders too. A DWF published as a 3D model stores its geometry in a HOOPS .w3d stream, which the viewer decodes into a real 3D model you can orbit, section, and measure — shaded surfaces, per-part colors and transparency, the assembly tree, and repeated parts shared rather than duplicated. Files published from Inventor, AutoCAD, and Revit all open this way.

▶What is the difference between DWF and DWG?
DWG is AutoCAD’s editable native drawing file — the working source. DWF is a published, read-only snapshot of that drawing, meant for viewing, plotting, and review. Think of DWG as the editable document and DWF as the print-ready PDF-style deliverable. If you need to edit the drawing you want the DWG; if you just need to see or plot it, DWF is lighter and opens here instantly. Our DWG viewer opens the source form.
▶Do I need Autodesk Design Review to open a DWF?
No. Autodesk discontinued Design Review, and this viewer replaces it — it reads DWF directly in your browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iPad, and Android. Nothing to download or install.
▶Does it open DWFx files too?
Yes. DWFx (the XPS-wrapped variant produced by newer Autodesk apps and the “Autodesk DWFx Writer” print driver) opens the same way. Its sheets are XPS page markup rather than WHIP streams, and the viewer draws that markup directly — linework, hatching, raster overlays, and text set in the drawing’s own embedded fonts, so dimension and GD&T symbols read correctly. 3D DWFx sections render as models, same as classic .dwf.
▶Can it open a 3D DWF?
Yes. A 3D DWF stores its model in a HOOPS .w3d stream, and the viewer decodes it into shaded 3D geometry you can orbit and measure, with part colors and the assembly structure intact. A file holding both 3D and 2D sections shows a sheet picker so you can move between the model and its plotted sheets.

Yes. A published DWF often bundles a whole drawing set. When it holds more than one sheet, a Sheet dropdown appears in the top-left of the viewer; pick any sheet and it re-renders instantly. The viewer only decodes the sheet you’re looking at, so even a large set opens fast.
▶Is the drawing still to scale and measurable?
The drawing renders at its true published proportions on its paper, so you can zoom in on any detail without pixelation. Use Tools in the toolbar for the scale bar and to measure distances on the sheet.
▶Is this DWF viewer really free?

▶Are my files uploaded to a server?
