Convert VRML 1.0 to VRML 2.0 (Free)

VRML 1.0 dates from 1995. Rewrite it as VRML 2.0, the version today’s tools read.

Also converts STL, OBJ, GLB, PLY, USDZ, 3MF from the same file.

Runs in your browser. No upload, no signup, nothing to install.

Also from Innerscene: Circadian Lab, a free lighting calculator for room illuminance, melanopic EML, and glare.

Your VRML 1.0 file is read and converted on your own machine. It is never uploaded.

Why convert VRML 1.0

VRML 1.0 dates from 1995, and most software that still reads VRML reads only newer versions. Rewriting the file as VRML 2.0 lets that software open it. Blender’s importer and three.js are two of the readers that take VRML 2.0 only.

How to convert VRML 1.0 to VRML 2.0

  1. 1

    Open your .wrl file

Drag it onto the viewer above, or click "Open a VRML File". It is read in your browser.

  2. 2

Choose VRML 2.0 in the Export menu

Click Export in the toolbar, then VRML (.wrl).

  3. 3

    Save the VRML 2.0 file

The file is written in your browser and saved straight to your downloads folder.

What survives the conversion

The viewer rebuilds the file from what it decoded, entity by entity, and writes it as VRML 2.0. What survives is what the viewer reads and VRML 2.0 can hold.

GeometryKeptFace sets, line sets and point sets are written as VRML 2.0 IndexedFaceSet, IndexedLineSet and PointSet nodes.
ColorsKeptMaterial colors and transparency become VRML 2.0 Material nodes, and per-vertex colors carry across as Color nodes.
StructureReducedThe scene is written flat: each shape in its final position with its transforms applied, and every reused shape written out in full.
TexturesDroppedImage textures are not written.

Layers you switch off in the Layers panel are left out of the saved file.

Your file never leaves your computer

Both the VRML 1.0 parser and the VRML 2.0 writer are JavaScript and WebAssembly running in your own browser tab. There is no upload step, no server-side conversion queue, and no copy of your file anywhere but your machine. That matters for drawings under NDA, for client work, and for anything you would not email to a stranger.
