Everything in an Unreal Engine project’s Content folder is a package: a .uasset for each asset and a .umap for each level. A package starts with a summary that records the engine version that saved it, then a table of names, the objects it imports from other packages, the objects it exports and their properties, and bulk data for the heavy parts such as mesh geometry and texture mips.
A static mesh keeps the geometry it was imported with for each level of detail, as a RawMesh in early Unreal Engine 4 and as a MeshDescription from 4.22 on, plus its material slots. A level lists its actors, and each StaticMeshActor names the static mesh it shows and its location, rotation and scale.
This viewer reads the package with its own reader, in your browser, and draws LOD0 of a static mesh with one group per material slot, upright and in metres. A level draws its static mesh actors from the .uasset files you add with it. The result exports as OBJ, FBX, GLB or STL.
Who Uses Unreal Engine UASSET Files?
Game developers, technical artists and level designers working in Unreal Engine, architects and product designers who present work in Unreal, students handed a project folder, and anyone who has a .uasset from a repository or a colleague and wants to see the mesh without installing the engine.
Common Use Cases
- See what a .uasset static mesh looks like without opening the Unreal Editor
- Check the engine version an asset was saved with and its material slots
- Preview a level’s static mesh actors from its .umap and Content folder
- Convert a static mesh to OBJ, FBX, GLB or STL for another tool or a 3D printer
- Find out whether a file is an editor asset or cooked game data
Features
Opens .uasset Static Meshes
Static meshes saved by the Unreal Editor in Unreal Engine 4.0 to 4.27, recognised by their content, also inside a .zip.
Levels From Their .umap
Every StaticMeshActor at its location, rotation and scale, drawn from the .uasset files you add with the level.
Engine Basic Shapes Built In
Cubes, spheres, cylinders, cones and planes a level places are drawn without the engine’s files.
Material Slots as Layers
Each material slot on its own layer in its own colour, named as in the editor, so you can hide the ones in the way.
Upright and in Metres
Unreal’s Z-up axis and centimetres are converted so the mesh stands up at its real size.
Engine Version Named
The Unreal Engine version that saved the package, in the notices and the details.
Clear Notices
UE5 Oodle-compressed meshes, cooked game data, .pak and IoStore containers, UE3 packages and project files are named, with what to do next.
Convert to OBJ, FBX or GLB
Save the mesh as OBJ, FBX, GLB, glTF, STL, 3MF, PLY, USDZ or DAE, or the view as PDF, PNG or JPG.
Nothing Is Uploaded
The package is read and drawn entirely in your browser. No account, no upload, no copy of your asset on a server.
Share and Embed
Send a link that opens the mesh in any browser, or put the viewer in your own page with one iframe.
Compatibility & Format Notes
Static meshes saved by Unreal Engine 4.0 to 4.27 open: the RawMesh source of the early 4.x releases (plain or zlib-compressed) and the MeshDescription source from 4.22 on, LOD0, with each material slot on its own layer. Levels (.umap) from the same releases place their StaticMeshActors from the .uasset files dropped or zipped with them, and draw the engine’s basic shapes (cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, plane) themselves.
Unreal Engine 5 packages are read too, but the editor compresses a UE5 static mesh’s geometry with Oodle, Epic’s proprietary codec, which the viewer does not decode; it says so and names the engine version. Export those meshes from the Unreal Editor as FBX or OBJ (Asset Actions > Export).
Cooked game data (a .uasset with its .uexp and .ubulk, .pak archives, IoStore .utoc and .ucas containers), Unreal Engine 3 packages and project files (.uproject, .uplugin) are recognised and named, but not drawn. Materials show as flat colours per slot. Nothing is sent to a server.
Embed on Your Website
Add this viewer to your own site with a single line of HTML. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate an embed code, or use the snippet below with your own file URL.
Your Files Stay on Your Computer
Your Unreal Engine UASSET files are parsed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared unless you explicitly click the Share button. Shared files are hosted for 90 days then deleted.
Frequently Asked Questions
▶How do I open a .uasset file without Unreal Engine?
Drop it on this page. If it is a static mesh saved by the Unreal Editor, the viewer draws it in your browser, on Windows, a Mac, a Chromebook, Linux or a phone. Other assets (materials, textures, Blueprints) are named, with how to export them from the editor.
▶Why does my Unreal Engine 5 mesh not open?
The Unreal Editor in UE5 compresses mesh geometry with Oodle, a proprietary codec from Epic that this viewer cannot decode. In the Unreal Editor, right-click the asset and choose Asset Actions > Export to save it as FBX or OBJ, then open that file here.
▶Can I open a whole level?
Yes. Drop the .umap together with the static mesh .uasset files it uses, or a .zip of the level and its Content folder. The viewer places each StaticMeshActor at its location, rotation and scale, and asks for any mesh file that is missing. Actors built from Blueprints keep their meshes in the Blueprint and are not placed.
▶What about .pak, .uexp and .utoc files?
Those are cooked game data: the content of a packaged game, built for the engine to load at run time, and often encrypted. The viewer names what they are. Open the original project in the Unreal Editor to export the asset you need.
▶Is this Unreal Engine UASSET viewer really free?
Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.
▶Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.
▶Can I convert to another format?
Yes. Click Export in the toolbar to save the static mesh or level as OBJ, FBX, GLB, glTF, STL, 3MF, PLY, USDZ or DAE. The viewer does not write .uasset files.
▶Can I embed this viewer on my own site?
Yes. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate a one-line <iframe> snippet you can paste into any HTML page. You can choose whether the embed shows the viewer’s toolbar.
