What Is a Silhouette Studio File?
A .studio3 file is the native document of Silhouette Studio, the design and cutting app for Silhouette’s craft cutters. It holds the page setup (a preset such as Letter or A4, or a custom size), the layers, and one record per shape. Each shape’s outline is a closed path of Bézier nodes, stored twice: once as drawn, in the shape’s own coordinates, and once as placed on the page, in millimetres. After the document comes a PNG preview of the design.
The file is neither compressed nor encrypted. It opens with the ASCII marker silhouette05;, where the digit is the format generation, followed by little-endian binary records. This viewer reads the placed copy of every path, flattens its curves, and draws each one as a closed cut line on the page outline, so what you see is where the blade would travel.
The .studio3 format belongs to Silhouette Studio, and other cutting programs such as Cricut Design Space and LightBurn do not open it. The viewer’s Export menu writes the same paths as SVG or DXF, which those programs import.

Compatibility & Format Notes
The viewer reads the placed paths of files with the silhouette05; header: straight segments and cubic curves, in millimetres, with the page outline taken from the page size the file stores or its named preset (A3, A4, A5, Letter, Legal, Tabloid). Every path is drawn as a red cut line on one Cut lines layer and the page outline on its own Page layer; the design’s fill and line colours and its cut settings are not shown. Each record is checked before it is used, and damaged records are stepped over, so a partly damaged file still shows the paths that can be read.
Files of any silhouette0N; generation are recognised by their content, whatever they are named. When no path in a file can be read, the viewer shows the preview image Silhouette Studio stored in it, and the status line marks it as a preview image. A file with neither readable paths nor a preview gets a notice explaining how to save the design as SVG or DXF from Silhouette Studio.

Frequently Asked Questions
▶Can I use a .studio3 file with a Cricut?
Cricut Design Space does not open .studio3 files, but it uploads SVG and DXF. Open the design here, click Export and choose SVG or DXF, then upload that file to Design Space. The export holds the cut outlines only: the Silhouette cut settings and colours are not carried over.
▶Will the exported SVG or DXF be the right size?
Yes. The DXF export records millimetres as its unit, so programs that read DXF units import it at its true size. The SVG export writes the path coordinates in millimetres and gives its width and height in millimetres too, so Cricut Design Space, Inkscape and Illustrator import it at the size shown in the viewer.
▶How do I leave the page outline out of the export?
The page outline is on its own Page layer. Turn it off in the Layers panel before you export, and only the cut lines are written. The SVG export holds only the lines themselves, with no background shape for the cutter to pick up.
▶Why does my design open as a picture?
When the viewer cannot read any cut path in a file, it shows the preview image Silhouette Studio saved inside it, and the status line says it is a preview image. A picture has no cut paths to export. To get paths, open the design in Silhouette Studio and save it as SVG or DXF (File > Save As > Save to Hard Drive).
▶Can I open a zipped .studio3 download?
Yes. Drop the .zip on the viewer and the .studio3 inside it opens. When the zip also holds a DXF or SVG copy of the design, as many cut-file bundles do, that copy is opened first; to see the .studio3 itself, unzip it and drop the .studio3 on its own.
▶Which Silhouette Studio versions are supported?
Files are recognised by their silhouette0N; header, so every generation is identified. Path reading was built and tested on the silhouette05; layout; when a file’s paths are laid out differently, the viewer shows the preview image stored in it.
▶Is this Silhouette Studio viewer really free?
Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.
▶Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.
▶Can I convert to another format?
Yes. Click Export in the toolbar to save the cut paths as DXF, SVG or PDF (a snapshot of the view, or true vector linework), or as a PNG or JPG image. DWG is also offered: that one is converted on our server from the DXF the viewer writes. A design that opened as its preview picture has no cut paths, so its exports hold the picture only.
