What Is a Sweet Home 3D File?

Sweet Home 3D is a free, open-source interior design application for Windows, macOS and Linux, with an online edition that runs in the browser. You draw walls and rooms on a 2D plan, drop in furniture, doors and windows from a catalogue, and the program builds the 3D view as you go. Everything is saved in one .sh3d file.

A .sh3d is a ZIP archive. It describes the home twice: as Home.xml, written since Sweet Home 3D 5.3, and as Home, the same home as a serialized Java object, which is the only copy in files saved by older versions. The description lists the levels, each wall’s plan line, thickness and height, each room’s outline, and every placed piece with its position, size, angle, elevation and colours. The 3D model of each piece is stored alongside in numbered entries, usually an OBJ file with its MTL materials and textures.

This viewer reads that description and builds the home the way Sweet Home 3D builds its 3D view: walls joined at their corners with the openings their doors and windows cut, room floors and ceilings, and every piece fitted to its size and set in place, level by level, in centimetres. The result can be orbited, measured and exported to OBJ, GLB and the other 3D formats.

Who Uses Sweet Home 3D Files?

Homeowners planning a renovation or a move, interior designers and kitchen and furniture retailers sketching a layout for a client, students and teachers in architecture and design courses, and real estate agents showing how a space could be furnished. The people who receive a .sh3d file (a partner, a client, a contractor) often do not have Sweet Home 3D installed, and this viewer lets them look at the home on any computer or phone.

Common Use Cases

  • Look at a home layout someone sent you without installing Sweet Home 3D
  • Walk a client around a furnished floor plan on a laptop or phone
  • Measure room sizes, wall heights and furniture clearances in the 3D model
  • Check each level of a multi-storey home by switching its layers on and off
  • Export the furnished home to OBJ, GLB or USDZ for rendering, games or AR
  • Save a view of the layout as a PDF or PNG for a quote or a presentation

Features

The Whole Home in 3D

Walls, room floors, furniture, doors, windows and lights are built from the home description, the way Sweet Home 3D builds its 3D view.

Walls With Their Openings

Walls join at their corners, curve and slope where the plan says so, and have the openings their doors and windows cut.

Furniture Where You Placed It

Every piece is fitted to its width, depth and height, turned, tilted, mirrored and raised exactly as it was set in the plan.

Colours and Textures

OBJ models keep their MTL colours and textures, wall sides and floors keep theirs, and colour changes made in Sweet Home 3D are applied.

Every Level

Multi-storey homes stack each level at its elevation, with separate layers per level so you can look into the floor below.

Ceilings on Their Own Layer

Ceilings are built but start hidden, so the home opens with its rooms visible from above. One click shows them.

Old Files Too

Files saved before Sweet Home 3D 5.3 store the home only as a serialized Java object. That form is read as well.

Real Sizes in Centimetres

The home keeps the unit Sweet Home 3D stores, so room widths, wall heights and clearances measure true.

Clear About What Is Missing

Pieces whose model is missing or unreadable are counted on the status line, and a damaged home opens its furniture models one by one with a note saying so.

Export to 3D and 2D Formats

Save the home as OBJ, GLB, USDZ, STL, 3MF, STEP, DXF, DWG and more, or as a PDF, SVG or image of the current view.

Nothing Is Uploaded

The home is read and built entirely in your browser. No account, no upload, no copy of your plan on a server.

Share and Embed

Send a link that opens the home in any browser, or drop the viewer into your own page with one iframe.

Compatibility & Format Notes

Homes are read from Home.xml when the file has one, and from the serialized Home entry otherwise, so files saved before Sweet Home 3D 5.3 open as well. Walls are built from their plan lines, thickness and heights, joined at their corners, curved where the wall carries an arc and sloped where its height changes along its length, with each side’s colour or texture. Rooms draw their floors, and their ceilings on a Ceilings layer that starts hidden so the home can be seen from above. Each piece of furniture, door, window and light is placed with its model rotation, width, depth and height, mirroring, angle, tilt and elevation, and furniture groups are expanded into their pieces. Piece colours and per-material colour changes made in Sweet Home 3D are applied.

Furniture models stored as OBJ keep their MTL colours and textures. Models imported in other formats (DAE, 3DS, glTF, FBX and others the viewer reads) are opened with the viewer’s own readers. Layers split walls, floors, ceilings, furniture, doors and windows, and lights, per level when the home has more than one. Furniture hidden in Sweet Home 3D is not drawn, and the layers of a level marked as not viewable start hidden.

Dimension lines, text labels, plan polylines, the compass and the ground and sky settings are not drawn. A piece whose model is missing from the file, or stored in a form the viewer does not read, is left out and counted on the status line. When the home description itself cannot be read, because the file is damaged or stores its home in a form the viewer does not read, the furniture models open one at a time and the status line says so.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶Why can’t I see the ceilings?

Ceilings are on their own layer, which starts hidden so that the home opens with its rooms and furniture visible from above. Turn the Ceilings layer on in the layer panel to see them. In a home with several levels, each level has its own Ceilings layer.

▶Does it open homes with several levels?

Yes. Every level is built at its own elevation, so the storeys stack as they do in Sweet Home 3D. The layer panel lists the walls, floors, ceilings, furniture, doors and windows, and lights of each level separately (for example “Upper floor: Walls”), so you can hide the top floor to look into the one below.

▶Will a .sh3d file from an old version of Sweet Home 3D open?

Yes. Since version 5.3, Sweet Home 3D saves the home as Home.xml. Older versions saved it only as a serialized Java object named Home, and the viewer reads that form too, so the walls, rooms and furniture of an old home are built the same way.

▶Why does the status line say “furniture models only”?

The file’s home description could not be read: the file may be damaged, or its home is stored in a form this viewer does not read. The walls, rooms and furniture layout are then not shown, and the furniture models inside the file open one at a time instead. If Sweet Home 3D opens the file, save it again, or use 3D view > Export to OBJ format and upload the .obj zipped with its .mtl and texture files.

▶Why are some pieces of furniture missing?

A piece is left out when its 3D model is missing from the file or is stored in a form the viewer does not read. The status line shows how many pieces were left out, for example “3 pieces not shown”. Pieces hidden in Sweet Home 3D’s furniture list are also not drawn.

▶What units does the model use?

Centimetres, the unit Sweet Home 3D stores. Walls, rooms and furniture keep their real sizes, so measurements taken in the viewer match the plan.

▶Is this Sweet Home 3D viewer really free?

Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.

▶Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.

▶Can I convert to another format?

Yes. Click Export in the toolbar to save the home as STL, OBJ, GLB, PLY, USDZ, 3MF, WRL, STEP, DXF, DWG (converted on our server), 3DM, PDF (a snapshot or a vector drawing), SVG, PNG or JPG. Layers you have hidden are left out of the 3D exports.

▶Can I embed this viewer on my own site?

Yes. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate a one-line <iframe> snippet you can paste into any HTML page. You can choose whether the embed shows the viewer’s toolbar.
