What Is an OpenSCAD File?
OpenSCAD is free, open-source software for solid 3D modelling by code. A .scad file is a program that builds the model from primitives (cubes, spheres, cylinders, polygons, text), moves and rotates them, and combines them with union, difference and intersection. Modules and functions make the design parametric, so one file can produce a whole family of parts by changing a few numbers.
This viewer runs the program with its own OpenSCAD interpreter in your browser: modules, functions, function literals, recursion, for, let, if and each, list comprehensions including the C-style for, $fn, $fa and $fs, children(), echo() and assert(), and include<> and use<>. The solids are built with manifold-3d, the same geometry kernel OpenSCAD itself has rendered with since 2024. The output matches OpenSCAD 2021.01: the same facet counts from $fn, $fa and $fs and the same twist direction and slicing, checked by comparing volumes and bounding boxes with OpenSCAD’s own STL exports of its bundled examples.
The model exports like any other, for example to STL or 3MF for 3D printing, or to OBJ, GLB, STEP or DXF.
Who Uses OpenSCAD Files?
Makers and 3D printing hobbyists write OpenSCAD to design brackets, enclosures, gears and replacement parts, and many customizable models on Thingiverse are shared as .scad files. Engineers use it for parametric parts generated from dimensions, and library users build on BOSL2, BOSL and MCAD. This page opens those files in any browser, with nothing to install and no sign-in.
Common Use Cases
- Look at a .scad model from Thingiverse without installing OpenSCAD
- Check a parametric design after changing its numbers
- Render an OpenSCAD design to STL or 3MF for a slicer
- Open a design that uses BOSL2, BOSL or MCAD
- See which module made each part of the model
- Send a share link that opens the model in any browser
Features
Runs OpenSCAD Programs
Modules, functions, recursion, loops, let, if and list comprehensions, $fn, $fa and $fs, children(), echo() and assert(), run by our own interpreter in your browser.
Every Built-in Shape
cube, sphere, cylinder, polyhedron, square, circle, polygon and text in the Liberation fonts OpenSCAD uses, with kerning.
Booleans, Hull and Minkowski
union, difference, intersection, hull and minkowski, computed by manifold-3d, the geometry kernel OpenSCAD itself renders with.
Extrusions and Offsets
linear_extrude with twist, scale and slices, rotate_extrude with an angle, offset by r or delta with chamfer, and projection with cut.
Same Facets as OpenSCAD
Circles, spheres and cylinders get the facet counts OpenSCAD 2021.01 gives them, checked against OpenSCAD’s own STL exports of its bundled examples.
Colours and Modifiers
color() by name, hex or RGBA colours each solid; % background objects show translucent and # highlighted objects in pink.
BOSL2, BOSL and MCAD Built In
include<> and use<> of the common libraries load them on demand. Your own include files come from the same ZIP.
Imports and Height Maps
import() of STL and OFF solids and DXF and SVG outlines, and surface() from .dat files or PNG height maps.
Customizer Parameters and Console
The file’s Customizer parameters open in a Parameters panel with its groups, sliders and drop-downs, and the model runs again when you change one. echo() output shows as OpenSCAD’s console prints it, and an error names the file and line.
Convert to STL, 3MF or STEP
Export the model as STL or 3MF for printing, or as OBJ, GLB, STEP, DXF and more.
Nothing Is Uploaded
The program runs entirely in your browser. No OpenSCAD install, no account and no copy of your design on a server.
Share and Embed
Send a link that opens the model in any browser, or drop the viewer into your own page with one iframe.
Compatibility & Format Notes
Built-in modules: cube, sphere, cylinder, polyhedron, square, circle, polygon and text (Liberation Sans, Serif and Mono, OpenSCAD’s default fonts, with kerning); translate, rotate, scale, mirror, multmatrix and resize; color by name, hex or RGBA; union, difference, intersection, hull and minkowski; linear_extrude with twist, scale and slices; rotate_extrude with an angle; offset by r or delta, with chamfer; projection, with cut; import() of STL and OFF solids and DXF and SVG outlines; and surface() from .dat files or PNG height maps.
How it shows: color() colours each solid. Objects marked % show translucent as background objects, and objects marked # show in OpenSCAD’s highlight pink. Each top-level object is its own part, named after the module that made it. echo() output prints exactly as OpenSCAD’s console prints it, and a syntax error or a failed assert is reported with the file and line, as OpenSCAD reports it.
Files: a single .scad file, or a .zip of a design folder, so include<>, use<> and import() find their files. The BOSL2, BOSL and MCAD libraries are built in and load on demand. Converter pages: SCAD to STL and SCAD to 3MF.

Your Files Stay on Your Computer
Your OpenSCAD files are parsed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared unless you explicitly click the Share button. Shared files are hosted for 90 days then deleted.
Frequently Asked Questions
▶Do I need OpenSCAD installed?
No. The viewer has its own OpenSCAD interpreter and runs the program in your browser, with CSG by manifold-3d, the geometry kernel OpenSCAD itself renders with. Nothing is sent to a server to render the model.
▶Does the model come out the same as in OpenSCAD?
Yes. Circles, spheres and cylinders get the facet counts OpenSCAD 2021.01 gives them from $fn, $fa and $fs, and linear_extrude twists and slices the same way. The results were checked by comparing volumes and bounding boxes with OpenSCAD’s own STL exports of its bundled examples.
▶Can it open designs that use BOSL2 or MCAD?
Yes. BOSL2, BOSL and MCAD are built in and load when a file includes them. For your own include files, upload a .zip of the design folder and include<>, use<> and import() read them from it.
▶How do I turn a .scad file into an STL?
Open the file, then click Export and choose STL, or use the SCAD to STL converter. For a model with colours, the SCAD to 3MF converter keeps them.
▶What happens when my program has an error?
A syntax error or a failed assert is reported with the file and line, as OpenSCAD reports it, so you can find it in your editor.
▶Is this OpenSCAD viewer really free?
Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.
▶Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.
▶Can I convert to another format?
Yes. Click Export in the toolbar. The menu offers STL, 3MF, OBJ, GLB, STEP (a faceted solid), DXF and more.
▶Can I embed this viewer on my own site?
Yes. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate a one-line <iframe> snippet you can paste into any HTML page. You can choose whether the embed shows the viewer’s toolbar.
