What Is a Planogram File?
A planogram is the layout of a retail shelving section: the fixtures (base, back panel, shelves) and every product placed on them, with the number of facings each product gets across, up and back. Category managers and suppliers build planograms in space-planning software, and stores set their shelves from them.
NielsenIQ Spaceman saves planograms as .pln files. A text .pln describes itself: each kind of record (Section, Fixel, Position, Product) first lists its field names, then its rows. The viewer reads those records in your browser and draws each fixture as a solid and each product placement as its facings, sized from the product’s own width, height and depth, in centimetres. Each placement is a named part carrying the product name and UPC.
The shelf exports like any 3D model, for example to GLB, OBJ or DWG. Archicad also uses the .pln extension; an Archicad project opens in the Archicad viewer, and the viewer tells the two apart by their content.
Who Uses Planogram Files?
Retail category managers, space planners and merchandisers build planograms in Spaceman, and consumer-goods suppliers send them to retailers to propose a shelf. Store staff, sales reps and store designers receive the .pln files without a Spaceman licence; this page shows the shelf in any browser, with no sign-in.
Common Use Cases
- Look at a planogram someone sent you without installing Spaceman
- Check which product sits on which shelf, and how many facings it gets
- Turn a shelf plan into a 3D model for a store render or a presentation
- Bring a shelving section into a CAD store layout as DXF or DWG
- Save the view as a PDF or PNG for a report or an email
- Send a share link that opens the shelf in any browser
Features
Opens Spaceman .pln Planograms
NielsenIQ Spaceman planograms saved as text, loose or inside a .zip, in any code page.
Every Shelf in 3D
The base, the back panel and each shelf are drawn as solids at their saved size and position.
Products as Facings
Each placement is drawn as its facings across, up and back, sized from the product’s own dimensions.
Product Names and UPCs
The parts list names every placement with its product and UPC.
Fixtures and Products Layers
Hide the fixtures to see the products alone, or the products to see the empty shelving.
Real Size in Centimetres
The shelf opens at its real size, so measurements match the planogram.
Told Apart From Archicad
Archicad also writes .pln. The viewer reads the content, so each file opens as what it is.
Measure on the Shelf
Click two points to measure a distance at the shelf’s real size.
Convert to GLB, OBJ or DWG
Save the shelf as GLB, OBJ, STL, USDZ, DXF or DWG, or the view as PDF, PNG or JPG.
Nothing Is Uploaded
The file is read and drawn entirely in your browser. No account, no upload, no copy of your planogram on a server.
Share and Embed
Send a link that opens the shelf in any browser, or drop the viewer into your own page with one iframe.
Compatibility & Format Notes
What is drawn: every fixel (the base, the back panel, each shelf) as a solid in the colour saved with it, and every product position as its facings: across, up and back, sized from the product’s dimensions and pulled to the front of the shelf the way Spaceman places them. Products left at Spaceman’s default white fill get a steady colour per product so neighbours stand apart; products with a colour of their own keep it. The Layers panel lists Fixtures and Products, and the parts list names every placement with its product and UPC.
Files: Spaceman planograms saved as text, in any code page (Cyrillic and Western names both read), in centimetres, or in inches when the planogram is set to inches. Planograms are recognised by their content, so a renamed file still opens, and an Archicad .pln keeps opening as an Archicad project.
Not drawn: product images, shelf labels and tags, pegs and hooks, and sales or performance figures. The tested files are shelf planograms; products hung on pegboards are placed from the positions the file stores.

Frequently Asked Questions
▶Do I need Spaceman installed?
No. The viewer reads the planogram’s text records with its own reader, in your browser. Nothing from NielsenIQ needs to be installed, and no account is needed.
▶My .pln file is from Archicad. Does it open here?
Yes. Archicad and Spaceman both use .pln. The viewer checks the content: a Spaceman planogram opens as a shelf, and an Archicad project opens in the Archicad viewer.
▶Why are the products coloured when my planogram shows them white?
Spaceman fills a product white until it is given a colour, which in 3D would draw every product the same. Products left at that default get a steady colour of their own, so each product stands apart from its neighbours. A product with a colour set in Spaceman is drawn in that colour.
▶How do I find a product on the shelf?
Open the parts list: every product placement is listed with the product name and UPC. The Layers panel hides the fixtures or the products as a group, which leaves the other in view.
▶Is this planogram viewer really free?
Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.
▶Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.
▶Can I convert to another format?
Yes. Click Export in the toolbar. The menu offers GLB, OBJ, STL, USDZ, 3MF, PLY, STEP (a faceted solid), DXF, DWG (converted on our server), PDF, SVG, PNG and JPG.
▶Can I embed this viewer on my own site?
Yes. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate a one-line <iframe> snippet you can paste into any HTML page. You can choose whether the embed shows the viewer’s toolbar.
