What Is a Global Mapper Package File?
Global Mapper, from Blue Marble Geographics, is GIS software used for mapping, surveying and terrain work. Its package export writes the loaded layers into one binary .gmp file, so a whole project travels as a single attachment. Each layer keeps its name (often the file it was loaded from, such as a shapefile), its projection, and its features.
The viewer reads the package in your browser. Every vector layer becomes a layer you can hide or show, its lines are drawn as polylines and its single-point features as points, and the coordinates are scaled by the linear unit the package declares (meters or feet), so distances measure in real units.
The map exports like any drawing, for example to DXF, DWG or PDF. For other GIS vector data, see the shapefile viewer and the KML viewer.
Who Uses Global Mapper Package Files?
Surveyors, topographers, civil engineers, foresters and GIS analysts who work in Global Mapper, and the architects, contractors and clients they send packages to, who often do not have Global Mapper installed.
Common Use Cases
- Look at the contour lines in a package a surveyor sent, without installing Global Mapper
- Check which layers a package holds and how many features each one has
- Measure a distance on the map in the package’s own units
- Hide and show package layers from the Layers panel
- Convert the contours to DXF or DWG for a CAD site plan
- Save the map as a vector PDF or SVG for a report
Features
Opens .gmp Packages
Global Mapper packages with one or several vector layers, without Global Mapper.
Contours and Lines
Contour lines, roads, boundaries and other line features are drawn as polylines.
Point Features
Single-point features are drawn as points on the map.
Real-World Scale
Coordinates follow the package’s linear unit (meters or feet), so distances measure in real units.
Package Layers
Each package layer becomes a layer you can hide or show from the Layers panel.
Export to DXF, DWG, SVG or PDF
Save the map as a DXF or DWG with its layers, as SVG, or as a vector or snapshot PDF, plus PNG and JPG.
Nothing Is Uploaded
The file is read and drawn entirely in your browser. No account, no upload, no copy on a server.
Share and Embed
Send a link that opens the map in any browser, or drop the viewer into your own page with one iframe.
Compatibility & Format Notes
What is drawn: the vector layers of the package. Line features (contours, roads, boundaries) are drawn as polylines and single-point features as points, one viewer layer per package layer, in plan view.
Files: packages are recognised by their content, so a renamed file still opens. Garmin map files that also use the .gmp extension are a different format and are not read.
Not shown: raster imagery and elevation grids, feature styles, labels and attribute values. A package that holds only rasters or grids opens to a notice: export those layers from Global Mapper as GeoTIFF, or the vector layers as DXF or Esri Shapefile, and upload that file.
Embed on Your Website
Add this viewer to your own site with a single line of HTML. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate an embed code, or use the snippet below with your own file URL.
Your Files Stay on Your Computer
Your Global Mapper Package files are parsed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared unless you explicitly click the Share button. Shared files are hosted for 90 days then deleted.
Frequently Asked Questions
▶Do I need Global Mapper to open a .gmp file?
No. The package is read in your browser by this viewer’s own reader. Nothing is installed, and nothing is uploaded.
▶Why are my contour lines drawn flat?
The viewer draws the lines in plan view at their map positions. Elevation values kept in a layer’s attributes are not read, so contours are not lifted to their heights.
▶Why does my package open to a notice?
The package holds no vector lines or points, only raster imagery or elevation grids, which are not read from a package. Export them from Global Mapper as GeoTIFF, which this viewer opens as terrain, or export the vector layers as DXF or Esri Shapefile.
▶Is this Global Mapper package viewer really free?
Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.
▶Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.
▶Can I convert to another format?
Yes. Click Export in the toolbar. The map saves as DXF or DWG with the package layers as layers, as SVG, as a vector or snapshot PDF, or as PNG or JPG.
▶Can I embed this viewer on my own site?
Yes. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate a one-line <iframe> snippet you can paste into any HTML page. You can choose whether the embed shows the viewer’s toolbar.
