Free Online gbXML Viewer (No Signup)

A gbXML file (Green Building XML) is a building energy model: the walls, roofs, floors, windows and shading that bound each space, ready for energy and load analysis. This viewer draws it in 3D, in your browser, coloured by surface type. View and convert gbXML energy models in your browser.

Also opens DWG, DXF, STEP, IGES, IFC, SKP, STL, OBJ, GLB, FBX, 3DM and other 3D/CAD files. Drop any file on the viewer.

Works directly in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge

Also from Innerscene: Circadian Lab, a free lighting calculator for room illuminance, melanopic EML, and glare.

Private by default. Files are parsed locally in your browser. Uploading is only required if you choose to share a link.

What Is a gbXML File?

gbXML (Green Building XML) is the open schema that design tools use to hand a building to energy analysis. A gbXML file describes the building as the surfaces that bound its spaces: exterior and interior walls, roofs, floors, ceilings and shades, each with its windows, doors and skylights, along with spaces, zones, constructions and materials.

The viewer reads the file in your browser and draws every surface from its outline, with its openings cut out and drawn as glass or doors. Surfaces are coloured by type, so exterior walls, roofs and shading read at a glance, and each surface type is a layer you can turn off. The scene tree groups the surfaces under the space they bound, and the spaces under their zones or storeys.

gbXML files are usually named .xml; the viewer recognises them by their content. Try the gbXML sample or convert a model to GLB or OBJ.

Who Uses gbXML Files?

Architects export gbXML from Revit, ArchiCAD, Vectorworks and SketchUp plugins; energy modellers and mechanical engineers import it into OpenStudio, EnergyPlus, IES VE, eQUEST, DesignBuilder, Trane TRACE and Carrier HAP. Checking the export before the analysis catches missing roofs, open shells and misplaced windows early, and this page does that without installing any of those tools.

Common Use Cases

  • Check a gbXML export from Revit or ArchiCAD before an energy analysis
  • Find missing surfaces, gaps or misplaced openings in an energy model
  • Turn off roofs or shading to see the spaces inside
  • See which surfaces belong to which space and zone
  • Convert the energy model geometry to GLB, OBJ, DXF or STEP
  • Send a share link that opens the model in any browser

Features

Opens gbXML Energy Models

gbXML files from Revit, ArchiCAD, OpenStudio, IES VE, eQUEST, DesignBuilder and other tools, saved as .xml or .gbxml.

Every Surface in 3D

Walls, roofs, floors, ceilings and shades drawn from their outlines, at their real size.

Openings Cut Out

Windows, skylights and doors are cut out of their surfaces and drawn as glass or doors.

Coloured by Surface Type

Exterior walls, roofs, interior walls, floors and shades each in their own colour.

Surface Types as Layers

Turn off roofs, shading or interior walls to look inside the model.

Spaces and Zones

The scene tree groups surfaces under their space, and spaces under their zone or storey.

Real Units

The model opens in the file’s own length unit, feet or metres, so measurements match.

Convert to GLB, OBJ or DXF

Save the geometry as GLB, OBJ, STL, FBX, STEP or DXF, or the view as PDF, PNG or JPG.

Nothing Is Uploaded

The file is read and drawn entirely in your browser. No account, no upload, no copy of your model on a server.

Share and Embed

Send a link that opens the model in any browser, or drop the viewer into your own page with one iframe.

Compatibility & Format Notes

What is drawn: every surface of the campus from its planar geometry, with its openings cut out; windows, skylights, doors and air openings as their own surfaces; surfaces coloured by their surfaceType (exterior wall, interior wall, roof, floors, ceilings, underground surfaces, shade, air). Files without campus surfaces draw their spaces’ closed shells.

Files: gbXML 0.37 to 7.x, saved as .xml or .gbxml, in UTF-8 or the UTF-16 Revit writes, in any of the schema’s length units. Models placed at survey coordinates are drawn about their own centre.

Not shown: constructions, materials, schedules and simulation results, which the file may carry for analysis tools.

Embed on Your Website

Add this viewer to your own site with a single line of HTML. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate an embed code, or use the snippet below with your own file URL.

<iframe src="https://www.innerscene.com/tools/gbxml-viewer?embedded=1&url=YOUR_XML_URL" width="800" height="600" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Share as a single HTML file

Export the model as one .html file that opens in any web browser, offline, with orbit, pan and zoom. The person you send it to needs no 3D software, no install and no account.

Your Files Stay on Your Computer

Your gbXML files are parsed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared unless you explicitly click the Share button. Shared files are hosted for 90 days then deleted.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶What is a gbXML file?

A Green Building XML file: an energy model of a building, written by design tools for energy and load analysis. It describes the surfaces that bound each space, their openings, and the spaces and zones.

▶My gbXML file ends in .xml. Will it open?

Yes. Most gbXML files are named .xml. The viewer reads the start of the file and opens it as an energy model when its root element is gbXML; other XML files open as text.

▶What do the colours mean?

Each surface takes the colour of its type: exterior walls yellow, roofs dark red, interior walls green, floors light blue, slabs on grade brown, shades light orange, air surfaces yellow. Windows and skylights are see-through blue and doors brown. The Layers panel lists every type with its colour.

▶Is this gbXML viewer really free?

Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.

▶Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.

▶Can I convert to another format?

Yes. Click Export in the toolbar to save as STL (3D printing), OBJ (Wavefront), GLB (glTF binary), or PDF (snapshot of the current view).

▶Can I embed this viewer on my own site?

Yes. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate a one-line <iframe> snippet you can paste into any HTML page. You can choose whether the embed shows the viewer’s toolbar.
