Why save as DXF R12
AutoCAD opens files saved by older versions, never files saved by newer ones. A file in DXF 2013 format, which AutoCAD 2013 to 2017 saves, is refused by every earlier release, so a colleague, a client or a machine still on an older version cannot open it. A copy saved as DXF R12 opens in AutoCAD R11 and later. R12 is also the version laser cutters, CNC and CAM software and plotter drivers most often ask for, because it is the simplest DXF there is.
How to convert DXF 2013 to DXF R12
- 1
Open your .dxf file
Drag it onto the viewer above, or click "Open a DXF File". It is read in your browser.
- 2
Choose DXF R12 in the Export menu
Click Export in the toolbar, then DXF (.dxf). A 2D drawing is always written as DXF R12.
- 3
Save the DXF R12 file
The file is written in your browser and saved straight to your downloads folder.
What survives the conversion
The viewer rebuilds the file from what it decoded, entity by entity, and writes it as DXF R12. What survives is what the viewer reads and DXF R12 can hold.
| Line work | Kept | Lines, arcs, circles and points stay as themselves and polylines become R12 polylines. |
|---|---|---|
| Layers | Kept | Layers keep their names. Colors become the nearest of AutoCAD’s 255 index colors, because R12 has no true color. |
| Splines and ellipses | Reduced | R12 has no spline or ellipse entity, so each one is written as a polyline that follows it closely. |
| Blocks | Reduced | Blocks are exploded: each insert is written as the entities it draws, so the R12 file has no block definitions to edit. |
| Hatches | Reduced | A hatched or filled area is written as its outline plus SOLID fill triangles. The hatch pattern is not rebuilt as a hatch object. |
| Text | Reduced | Text is written as single-line TEXT at its position and height, anchored at its left baseline, so centered or right-aligned labels shift. |
| Dimensions | Reduced | Dimensions arrive as the lines, arrowheads and text that draw them. |
| Images | Dropped | Raster images are left out: a DXF refers to them by file path, and there is no file to point at. |
| 3D faces and meshes | Reduced | A DXF that holds 3D faces or meshes opens as a 3D model, and none of its DXF exports is R12: 3D faces, a 2D drawing of the view and a three-view drawing sheet are all DXF 2000 (AC1015) files, which AutoCAD 2000 and later and most CAD programs open. The 3D faces export writes every triangle as a 3DFACE, in millimeters; a model of more than 300,000 triangles is written from a simplified copy, and the export says so. |
Layers you switch off in the Layers panel are left out of the saved file.

Your file never leaves your computer
Both the DXF 2013 parser and the DXF R12 writer are JavaScript and WebAssembly running in your own browser tab. There is no upload step, no server-side conversion queue, and no copy of your file anywhere but your machine. That matters for drawings under NDA, for client work, and for anything you would not email to a stranger.

Frequently asked questions
▶Is this DXF 2013 to DXF R12 converter free?
Yes. No signup, no watermark, no per-file limit and no paid tier. Innerscene.
▶Is my DXF 2013 file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read with the browser file API and converted in the same tab. Nothing is sent to a server unless you explicitly click Share, which is a separate, opt-in feature.
▶Which versions of AutoCAD open the DXF R12 file?
AutoCAD R11 and later. The file is a standard DXF R12 file (AC1009), the version AutoCAD R11 to R12 saves.
▶What changes when the file is saved as DXF R12?
R12 has no spline or ellipse entity, so each one is written as a polyline that follows it closely. Blocks are exploded: each insert is written as the entities it draws, so the R12 file has no block definitions to edit. A hatched or filled area is written as its outline plus SOLID fill triangles. The hatch pattern is not rebuilt as a hatch object. Text is written as single-line TEXT at its position and height, anchored at its left baseline, so centered or right-aligned labels shift. Dimensions arrive as the lines, arrowheads and text that draw them. Raster images are left out: a DXF refers to them by file path, and there is no file to point at. A DXF that holds 3D faces or meshes opens as a 3D model, and none of its DXF exports is R12: 3D faces, a 2D drawing of the view and a three-view drawing sheet are all DXF 2000 (AC1015) files, which AutoCAD 2000 and later and most CAD programs open. The 3D faces export writes every triangle as a 3DFACE, in millimeters; a model of more than 300,000 triangles is written from a simplified copy, and the export says so.
▶Can I convert DXF R12 back to DXF 2013?
There is no need: AutoCAD 2013 to 2017 opens DXF R12 files directly. Anything listed above as reduced stays reduced, so keep your original DXF 2013 file as the master copy.
▶Which browsers does it work in?
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. No plugin and no extension.
