Convert DWG 2004 to DWG 2000 (Free)

Save a copy of a DWG 2004 file in DWG 2000 format, which AutoCAD 2000 and later opens.

Also converts DXF, SVG, PNG, JPG, HTML from the same file.

Runs in your browser. No upload, no signup, nothing to install.

Also from Innerscene: Circadian Lab, a free lighting calculator for room illuminance, melanopic EML, and glare.

The DWG 2004 is read and converted on your own machine. Only the resulting geometry is sent, to write the binary DWG.

Why save as DWG 2000

AutoCAD opens files saved by older versions, never files saved by newer ones. A file in DWG 2004 format, which AutoCAD 2004 to 2006 saves, is refused by every earlier release, so a colleague, a client or a machine still on an older version cannot open it. A copy saved as DWG 2000 opens in AutoCAD 2000 and later. The AutoCAD 2000 format is also the safest DWG to hand to other CAD programs, because nearly every DWG reader supports it.

How to convert DWG 2004 to DWG 2000

  1. 1

    Open your .dwg file

Drag it onto the viewer above, or click "Open a DWG File". It is read in your browser.

  2. 2

Choose DWG 2000 in the Export menu

Click Export in the toolbar, then DWG (.dwg). The DWG export always writes DWG 2000.

  3. 3

    Save the DWG 2000 file

The drawing is turned into a binary DWG on our converter and downloads as soon as it is ready, usually within seconds.

What survives the conversion

The viewer rebuilds the file from what it decoded, entity by entity, and writes it as DWG 2000. What survives is what the viewer reads and DWG 2000 can hold.

Line workKeptLines, arcs, circles, ellipses, points, polylines with their widths and bulges, splines and 3D faces are written as the same entities, in drawing units.
BlocksKeptBlocks stay blocks: each insert is written with its block definition, so editing the block still changes every copy.
HatchesKeptHatches keep their boundary loops and pattern lines.
Layers and stylesKeptLayers keep their color, linetype, lineweight and their on, frozen and locked states. Linetypes and text styles go into their tables.
TextReducedSingle-line text keeps its style and alignment. Multiline text (MTEXT) is written as one line of single-line text per paragraph.
DimensionsReducedEach dimension looks as it did, written as the block AutoCAD drew for it, but it is no longer a dimension object that updates when the geometry moves.
LayoutsReducedModel space and the paper space layout the viewer shows are written. Other layouts are not.
3D solidsReducedACIS solids and regions are written as the line work that draws them.
Images and OLEDroppedRaster images and embedded OLE objects are left out.

Layers you switch off in the Layers panel are left out of the saved file.

What happens to your file

Your DWG 2004 file is parsed in your own browser tab and never uploaded. Writing a binary DWG is the one step that cannot be done in a browser, so the geometry we generated locally is posted to our own converter as a DXF, turned into a DWG, and sent straight back.

What travels is the exported geometry, not your original file: no source document, no file name, no metadata. Nothing is retained after the response.

Free to Use, No Signup

There are no accounts and no watermarks on this converter. If it saved you time, the one thing we ask is a mention: a post, a link from your blog or course page, or a reply to someone asking how to open a file.

Frequently asked questions

▶Is this DWG 2004 to DWG 2000 converter free?

Yes. No signup, no watermark, no per-file limit and no paid tier. Innerscene.

▶Is my DWG 2004 file uploaded anywhere?

Your DWG 2004 file is not. It is read and converted in your own browser tab. Writing a binary DWG is the one step no browser can do, so the geometry produced locally is posted to our converter as a DXF and comes back as a DWG. Your original file, its name and its metadata never leave your machine.

▶Which versions of AutoCAD open the DWG 2000 file?

AutoCAD 2000 and later. The file is a standard DWG 2000 file (AC1015), the version AutoCAD 2000 to 2002 saves.

▶What changes when the file is saved as DWG 2000?

Single-line text keeps its style and alignment. Multiline text (MTEXT) is written as one line of single-line text per paragraph. Each dimension looks as it did, written as the block AutoCAD drew for it, but it is no longer a dimension object that updates when the geometry moves. Model space and the paper space layout the viewer shows are written. Other layouts are not. ACIS solids and regions are written as the line work that draws them. Raster images and embedded OLE objects are left out.

▶Can I convert DWG 2000 back to DWG 2004?

There is no need: AutoCAD 2004 to 2006 opens DWG 2000 files directly. Anything listed above as reduced stays reduced, so keep your original DWG 2004 file as the master copy.

▶Which browsers does it work in?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. No plugin and no extension.
