What Is a DIALux Project File?
DIALux is the lighting design program in which lighting designers and engineers lay out luminaires in a building and calculate the light they give. A .evo file is a project from DIALux evo, the current program: the building with its storeys, rooms, walls, doors and windows, the furniture, and every luminaire with its product data and its light distribution, all in one file. A .dlx file is a project from the older DIALux 4. An .stf file (Standard Transfer Format) is the plain-text room exchange file that DIALux 4 and DIALux evo write, and that Revit and other CAD plug-ins export for DIALux: room outlines and heights, wall reflectances, luminaire positions and furniture.
The viewer reads the file in your browser. It draws the rooms with their floors and ceilings, walls built from the storey outlines with the doors and windows cut out, floor slabs and roofs, columns, beams, suspended ceilings, the furniture and every luminaire as placed, with its body and its light-emitting surfaces, in metres and grouped by storey and room. Ceilings and roofs start hidden, so you look straight into the rooms.
Each luminaire type’s stored light distribution is drawn as a photometric web at every luminaire, on a layer you can turn on. The status line counts the rooms and luminaires, and the luminaire list gives each type’s name, manufacturer, article number, lumens, watts, colour temperature and CRI. Open in IES Viewer takes the photometry of the most used type to the IES Viewer for the polar plot and isofootcandle plan. The model exports to IFC, DWG, GLB and the other formats in the Export menu.
Who Uses DIALux Project Files?
Lighting designers, electrical engineers, architects, contractors, facility managers and luminaire sales representatives who receive a DIALux project and do not have DIALux at hand. DIALux runs only on Windows and asks for a login, so the viewer is also the way to check a project on a Mac, a tablet or a phone.
Common Use Cases
- Look at a DIALux evo or DIALux 4 project without installing DIALux
- Check where every luminaire sits in each room before a site visit or an order
- Read the luminaire types with their manufacturer, article number, lumens and watts
- See each luminaire type’s light distribution as a photometric web
- Take a luminaire’s photometry to the IES Viewer for the polar plot
- Open an STF room file exported from Revit or another CAD program
- Export the project as IFC, DWG or GLB for coordination or a render
Features
Opens .evo, .dlx and .stf
DIALux evo projects, DIALux 4 projects and STF room files from DIALux, Revit and other CAD plug-ins, also inside a .zip.
Rooms, Walls and Openings
Rooms with their floors and ceilings, and walls built from the storey outlines with the doors and windows cut out.
The Whole Building
Floor slabs, roofs, columns, beams and suspended ceilings, grouped by storey and room.
Every Luminaire as Placed
Each luminaire at its position with its body and its light-emitting surfaces.
Photometric Webs
Each luminaire type’s stored light distribution drawn at every luminaire, on a layer you can turn on.
Luminaire Data
Name, manufacturer, article number, lumens, watts, colour temperature and CRI for every luminaire type.
Open in the IES Viewer
One click takes the photometry of the most used type to the IES Viewer for the polar plot and isofootcandle plan.
Furniture and Objects
Furniture from its parametric shapes and its .m3d bodies, in the room where it stands.
Export to IFC, DWG or GLB
Save the project as IFC, DWG, DXF, STEP, GLB, OBJ or FBX, or the view as PDF, PNG or JPG.
No DIALux Needed
The file is read entirely in your browser, on Windows, a Mac, a tablet or a phone. No install, no account, no upload.
Compatibility & Format Notes
DIALux evo (.evo): buildings with their storeys and rooms, walls with their doors and windows, floor slabs, roofs, columns, beams, suspended ceilings, furniture and objects (from their parametric shapes and their .m3d bodies) and every luminaire with its stored light distribution. Projects from early DIALux evo releases to the current ones open, including archives saved with older compression.
DIALux 4 (.dlx) and STF (.stf): a DIALux 4 project opens with its rooms, furniture and luminaires; its photometry is not drawn yet. An STF file opens with its rooms, each wall in the grey of its reflectance, the luminaires as boxes or cylinders at their positions, and the furniture as cubes and cylinders.
Not drawn yet: street and sports-ground scenes, and the calculation results DIALux stores (illuminance values, false colours and isolines). For those, export IFC or DWG from DIALux (File > Export) and open that file here.

Your Files Stay on Your Computer
Your DIALux Project files are parsed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared unless you explicitly click the Share button. Shared files are hosted for 90 days then deleted.
Frequently Asked Questions
▶Do I need DIALux to open a .evo or .dlx file?
No. The viewer reads the project with its own reader, in your browser, on Windows, a Mac, a tablet or a phone. Nothing needs to be installed and no DIALux account is needed.
▶Where are the ceilings?
Ceilings and roofs start hidden so that the rooms, the furniture and the luminaires are in view. Turn them on in the layer panel.
▶Can I see the light distribution of the luminaires?
Yes. Each DIALux evo luminaire type’s stored photometry is drawn as a photometric web at every luminaire of that type, on a layer that starts hidden. Open in IES Viewer on the status line takes the most used type’s photometry to the IES Viewer, with the polar plot, the isofootcandle plan and the zonal lumen table.
▶What if my project does not open?
Street and sports-ground scenes are not drawn yet, and a damaged file may not open. In DIALux, export the project as IFC or DWG (File > Export) and open that file in the viewer.
▶Is this DIALux viewer really free?
Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.
▶Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.
▶Can I convert to another format?
Yes. Click Export in the toolbar. The project saves as IFC, DWG, DXF, STEP, GLB, glTF, OBJ, FBX, STL, DAE or USDZ, and the view as PDF, SVG, PNG or JPG. The viewer does not write DIALux files.
▶Can I embed this viewer on my own site?
Yes. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate a one-line <iframe> snippet you can paste into any HTML page. You can choose whether the embed shows the viewer’s toolbar.
