Free Online Shockwave Director Viewer (No Signup)

A .dcr file is a Shockwave movie, a Macromedia or Adobe Director movie compressed for the web; .dir is the same movie as Director saves it, and .cct and .cst are its casts. This viewer opens them in your browser, with no Director and no Shockwave plugin, and shows the 3D models of their Shockwave 3D cast members. View and convert Director movies and casts (.dcr, .dir, .cct, .cst) in your browser.

Also opens DWG, DXF, STEP, IGES, IFC, SKP, STL, OBJ, GLB, FBX, 3DM and other 3D/CAD files. Drop any file on the viewer.

Works directly in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge

Also from Innerscene: Circadian Lab, a free lighting calculator for room illuminance, melanopic EML, and glare.

Private by default. Files are parsed locally in your browser. Uploading is only required if you choose to share a link.

What Is a Shockwave Director File?

Director built games, CD-ROMs, kiosks and web applications from a cast of members (bitmaps, text, sounds, scripts and, from Director 8.5, Shockwave 3D scenes) placed on a stage by a score. Director saves a movie as .dir and a cast as .cst; publishing for the web compresses them into a Shockwave movie .dcr and a cast .cct (the Afterburner format).

Browsers stopped loading Shockwave years ago, so these movies no longer play anywhere. This viewer reads the file as data in your browser, compressed or not, finds the 3D cast members and draws their Shockwave 3D scenes: every model placed through its node tree, meshes at full resolution, materials and textures, turned upright. Each member is a group of layers named after it. Nothing in the movie runs: scripts, Xtras and the score are left alone.

The models export to GLB, OBJ, FBX and the other formats in the Export menu. A Shockwave 3D scene saved on its own (.w3d) opens in the W3D viewer.

Who Uses Shockwave Director Files?

Developers and archivists preserving Shockwave games and Director projects, 3D artists recovering models from an old game or product demo, and anyone holding a .dcr or .dir file that no program opens any more.

Common Use Cases

  • Look at the 3D models of a Shockwave game without Director or the Shockwave plugin
  • Recover the models of a .dcr or .dir movie as GLB, OBJ or FBX
  • See which cast members a movie holds, one layer group per 3D member
  • Open a compressed Shockwave cast (.cct) or a Director cast (.cst)
  • Look through the bitmaps of a 2D movie that has no 3D members

Features

Shockwave and Director Movies

Shockwave .dcr and .cct files and Director .dir and .cst files open, compressed or not, with no Director and no Shockwave plugin.

3D Cast Members

Every Shockwave 3D cast member is decoded with its models in place, meshes at full resolution, materials and textures.

One Layer Group per Member

Layers are named after their cast member; sky and lens-flare cards start hidden so the main model is in view.

2D Movies Too

A movie with no 3D cast members shows its bitmaps as pictures, with a note saying it has no 3D content.

Nothing Runs

Lingo scripts, Xtras and the score are never run: the file is read as data only.

Convert to GLB, OBJ or FBX

Save the models as GLB, OBJ, FBX, glTF, DAE or STL, or the view as PNG.

Nothing Is Uploaded

The file is read and drawn entirely in your browser. No account, no upload, no copy of your movie on a server.

Share and Embed

Send a link that opens the models in any browser, or drop the viewer into your own page with one iframe.

Compatibility & Format Notes

Read: Director movies and casts, saved (.dir, .dxr, .cst, .cxt, in either byte order) or published for Shockwave with Afterburner compression (.dcr, .cct). Every Shockwave 3D cast member is decoded like a .w3d file: the node tree with transforms, progressive meshes at full resolution, the material of each shader slot and the JPEG textures.

How it is drawn: the member with the most geometry is placed first and the other 3D members beside it, each as a group of layers named after the member. Members that are only a few flat cards (sky, clouds, lens flares) or far larger than the main model start hidden. A movie with no 3D members shows its bitmap cast members as pictures, with a note saying it has no 3D content.

Not read: Lingo and JavaScript scripts (never run), Xtras, the score and sprites on the stage, sounds, video, Flash members, text, and how scripts build or move a 3D world at run time (models a script clones, textures it swaps in, animation). Protected movies (.dxr, .cxt) open like the others; only the scripts are stripped from them.

Embed on Your Website

Add this viewer to your own site with a single line of HTML. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate an embed code, or use the snippet below with your own file URL.

Share as a single HTML file

Export the model as one .html file that opens in any web browser, offline, with orbit, pan and zoom. The person you send it to needs no 3D software, no install and no account.

Your Files Stay on Your Computer

Your Shockwave Director files are parsed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared unless you explicitly click the Share button. Shared files are hosted for 90 days then deleted.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶Do I need Director or the Shockwave plugin?

No. The file is read in your browser, so it opens on a computer or a phone with no Director and no Shockwave.

▶Does the movie play?

No. The viewer shows what the cast holds: the 3D models, or the bitmaps of a 2D movie. Scripts are never run, so the game or animation does not play.

▶Why are some models hidden?

Cast members made of a few flat cards (sky, clouds, lens flares) and members far larger than the main model start hidden so that they do not hide it. Show them from the layers panel.

▶My movie says it has no 3D content. Why?

Most Director movies are 2D: sprites, text and bitmaps on a stage. Only movies with Shockwave 3D cast members hold models. Their bitmaps are shown as pictures when the viewer can decode them.

▶Is this DCR viewer really free?

Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.

▶Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.

▶Can I convert to another format?

Yes. Click Export in the toolbar to save as STL (3D printing), OBJ (Wavefront), GLB (glTF binary), or PDF (snapshot of the current view).

▶Can I embed this viewer on my own site?

Yes. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate a one-line <iframe> snippet you can paste into any HTML page. You can choose whether the embed shows the viewer’s toolbar.
