Datasmith is the format Epic Games made for bringing design models into Unreal Engine and Twinmotion. The Datasmith exporters for Revit, SketchUp, 3ds Max, Rhino, Archicad, Vectorworks, Cinema 4D and SolidWorks write two things: a .udatasmith file, an XML scene that lists every actor with its transform, layer, mesh and materials, plus the lights and cameras; and a <name>_Assets folder holding the meshes as .udsmesh files and the texture images.
The viewer reads both in your browser. Every mesh actor is placed by its transform, with the actor hierarchy kept as the scene tree, and actors that share a mesh are drawn from one copy. Materials take their colours and textures from the scene’s material definitions, with transparency, metalness and roughness. The scene’s layers become layers you can turn off, lights are drawn as markers in their own colour, and cameras as small frustums on a layer of their own. The model is converted from Unreal’s centimetres to metres, at its real size.
Open the .udatasmith with its _Assets folder: as a .zip, by picking the .udatasmith together with the files of the folder, or by dropping the whole scene folder. A .udatasmith opened alone shows stand-in boxes, lights and cameras, and a card asks for the _Assets files. The scene converts to GLB, FBX or OBJ.
Who Uses Unreal Datasmith Files?
Architects and visualisation artists export Datasmith from Revit, SketchUp, 3ds Max, Rhino, Archicad, Vectorworks, Cinema 4D and SolidWorks to build real-time walkthroughs in Unreal Engine and Twinmotion. Studios hand the export on to visualisation teams, and clients receive it with a request to take a look. This page opens it without installing Unreal Engine or Twinmotion.
Common Use Cases
- Check a Datasmith export from Revit or SketchUp before it goes into Unreal Engine or Twinmotion
- See which actors, layers, lights and cameras an export carries
- Open a Datasmith scene someone sent you without installing Unreal Engine
- Convert a Datasmith scene to GLB, FBX, OBJ or USDZ for other tools
- Send a share link that opens the scene in any browser
Features
Opens Datasmith Scenes
.udatasmith files exported from Revit, SketchUp, 3ds Max, Rhino, Archicad, Vectorworks, Cinema 4D and SolidWorks, with their _Assets folder.
Every Actor in Place
Each mesh actor placed by its transform, with the actor hierarchy kept as the scene tree.
Materials and Textures
Colours, textures, transparency, metallic and roughness from the scene’s materials.
Shared Instances
Actors that share a mesh, and hierarchical instanced meshes, are drawn from one copy.
Scene Layers
The export’s layers become layers you can turn on and off.
Lights and Cameras
Lights as markers in their colour and cameras as small frustums, each group on its own layer.
Real Size in Metres
Unreal’s centimetres are converted to metres, so measurements match the model.
Convert to GLB, FBX or OBJ
Save the scene as GLB, glTF, OBJ, STL, FBX, DAE, USDZ, STEP, IFC, DXF or DWG, or the view as PDF, PNG or JPG.
Nothing Is Uploaded
The scene is read and drawn entirely in your browser. No account, no upload, no copy of your model on a server.
Share and Embed
Send a link that opens the scene in any browser, or drop the viewer into your own page with one iframe.
Compatibility & Format Notes
What is drawn: every mesh actor at its transform, with the actor hierarchy as the scene tree; actors sharing a static mesh drawn from one copy; hierarchical instanced meshes; material colours and textures (JPEG, PNG, WebP, DDS, TGA, BMP) from MasterMaterial and MaterialInstance properties and UEPbrMaterial graphs, with transparency, metallic and roughness; the scene’s layers as layers; point, spot (with its cone), rect area and directional lights as markers in their colour or colour temperature on a Lights layer; cameras as small frustums on a Cameras layer that starts hidden. Unreal’s left-handed, Z-up centimetres are converted to right-handed, Y-up metres.
Meshes from newer exporters: Datasmith 4.27 and later (the Unreal Engine 5 era exporters) compress each mesh with Oodle, Epic’s own compressor, which this viewer does not decode. Those meshes are drawn as see-through boxes of the size the scene records, and a chip counts them. Meshes in the earlier Datasmith layout (the 4.2x exporters, and the Blender Datasmith exporter) are drawn in full. For full geometry from a newer export, export FBX or glTF from the design application.
Files: a .udatasmith with its _Assets folder (as a .zip, as picked files or as a dropped folder), a .udatasmith on its own (stand-in boxes, lights and cameras), or a single .udsmesh.

Add this viewer to your own site with a single line of HTML. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate an embed code, or use the snippet below with your own file URL.
Your Files Stay on Your Computer
Your Unreal Datasmith files are parsed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared unless you explicitly click the Share button. Shared files are hosted for 90 days then deleted.
Frequently Asked Questions
▶What is a .udatasmith file?
The scene file of a Datasmith export: an XML list of the scene’s actors, meshes, materials, lights and cameras, written by design tools for Unreal Engine and Twinmotion. The meshes and textures it uses are in the _Assets folder saved beside it.
▶Why do I see see-through orange boxes?
Either the _Assets folder did not come with the .udatasmith, or its meshes were written by Datasmith 4.27 or later, which compresses them with Oodle. Missing files are listed on a card: drop the _Assets folder or its files onto it. Oodle-compressed meshes stay as boxes of the recorded size, and a chip counts them; export FBX or glTF from the design application for full geometry.
▶How do I open a Datasmith export with its _Assets folder?
Zip the .udatasmith and its _Assets folder together and open the .zip, pick the .udatasmith together with the files inside _Assets, or drag the folder that holds both onto the viewer.
▶Is this Datasmith viewer really free?
Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.
▶Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.
▶Can I convert to another format?
Yes. Click Export to save the scene as GLB, glTF, OBJ, STL, FBX, DAE, USDZ, STEP, IFC, DXF or DWG, or the view as PDF, PNG, JPG or SVG.
▶Can I embed this viewer on my own site?
Yes. Click Embed in the toolbar to generate a one-line <iframe> snippet you can paste into any HTML page. You can choose whether the embed shows the viewer’s toolbar.
