What Is a 3D XML File?
3D XML is the format Dassault Systemes uses to publish a model for people who do not have the CAD software: CATIA V5 and V6, 3DEXPERIENCE, SOLIDWORKS, DELMIA and ENOVIA all write it. A .3dxml file is a ZIP package. A manifest names the root product; product files describe the product structure, the assemblies and sub-assemblies with every part placed by its own position matrix; and .3DRep files hold each part’s shape as triangles, with the feature edges as polylines.
The viewer reads the package in your browser. It walks the product structure from the root, places every occurrence, and draws each part from its tessellated faces in the colour saved with each face. A part used many times is read once and drawn wherever it is used. Colours of materials applied in CATIA and the part positions the author saved in the file’s default view are applied too. The model opens in millimetres, turned upright from CATIA’s Z-up axes.
The model exports like any 3D model, for example to STEP, GLB, OBJ or STL. For exact B-rep geometry, ask for a STEP export and open it in the STEP viewer; SOLIDWORKS parts and assemblies open in the SolidWorks viewer.
Who Uses 3D XML Files?
Automotive and aerospace engineers publish 3D XML from CATIA to share designs across a supply chain, and SOLIDWORKS and 3DEXPERIENCE users send it to customers, suppliers and reviewers who have no CAD seat. Buyers, toolmakers, manufacturing engineers and managers receive the .3dxml; this page shows the assembly in any browser, with no sign-in and no Dassault software installed.

Compatibility & Format Notes
What is drawn: the product structure (assemblies, sub-assemblies and every placed part, including parts in other product files of the same package), each part’s tessellated faces from its XML .3DRep file (triangles, strips and fans, at full resolution), the feature edges as lines, the colour of each face, the colour of a CATIA material applied to a part, and the positions saved in the file’s default view. Older packages (schema 1.0 to 3.0, from 2005-2006 CATIA V5) are read too, including the shapes they store in CATIA’s binary CGR tessellation. The parts list names every occurrence as the assembly names it.
Files: .3dxml packages from CATIA V5 and V6, 3DEXPERIENCE, SOLIDWORKS, DELMIA and ENOVIA, loose or inside a .zip. The package is recognised by its content, so a renamed file still opens. Units are millimetres.
Not drawn: exact B-rep or NURBS geometry (3D XML carries triangles only), textures and pictures, annotations and PMI, and kinematics. Some exporters store shapes in Dassault’s newer binary representation or in XVL, which the viewer does not decode: the parts stored that way are counted on a note beside the model, and a file with only binary shapes opens to a notice that suggests a STEP export.

Frequently Asked Questions
▶Do I need CATIA or 3D XML Player installed?
No. The viewer reads the 3D XML package with its own reader, in your browser. Nothing from Dassault Systemes needs to be installed, and no account is needed.
▶Why are some parts missing?
The file probably stores those parts in Dassault’s binary representation, which this viewer does not decode. A note beside the model counts them. Ask for the model as STEP, or export it from CATIA, 3DEXPERIENCE or SOLIDWORKS as STEP, to get every part.
▶Is the geometry exact?
It is as exact as the file: 3D XML carries a triangle copy of each surface, written at the accuracy the exporter chose, which is right for viewing and measuring. For machining or further CAD work, use a STEP export of the original model.
▶Can I see the assembly structure?
Yes. Open the parts list: every occurrence is listed by the name it has in the assembly, and each can be hidden or isolated.
▶Is this 3D XML viewer really free?
Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, no file size limits on the viewer (the optional share-link feature has a 100 MB upload cap). Built by Innerscene as a tool for architects, engineers, and designers.
▶Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing, rendering, and conversion runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted by default. The Share button is the only feature that uploads a file, and only when you explicitly click it.
▶Can I convert to another format?
Yes. Click Export in the toolbar. The menu offers GLB, OBJ, STL, USDZ, 3MF, PLY, STEP (a faceted solid), DXF, DWG (converted on our server), PDF, SVG, PNG and JPG.
